About scrabble family names

"Scrabble family names" usually means one of two things: a real family surname spelled out in wooden Scrabble tiles as wall art, or a surname chosen because it would score big on the board. Both live on the same letter values. In standard English Scrabble, Q and Z score 10, J and X score 8, K scores 5, and F, H, V, W and Y score 4, while the common vowels and R, S, T, L, N are worth just 1. A surname like Vazquez carries two 10-point tiles and a 4-point V; Kwiatkowski packs a K, W and two more high letters, and even a short name like Fox (4+1+8) outscores a longer common one like Miller (8 total).

Many real surnames are naturally tile-rich because of their language of origin: Polish names (Zielinski, Wojcik, Kwiatkowski), Spanish names with Q and Z (Quintero, Zamora, Velazquez), German and Yiddish names ending in -tz or -witz (Katz, Schwartz, Horowitz), Turkish and Chinese romanisations (Yilmaz, Zhang, Xu), and English place-surnames built on X (Baxter, Huxley, Wexford). Alongside those, invented Q/X/Z blends like Quixley and Zaxwell are popular for fictional families in games and stories.

Use this list to find a surname for a character, a Sims household, a family game-night team, or a tile-art project, then count the letters to see how many tiles you will need and what the name would score.

Tips for choosing a name

  • To score a surname, add the tile values: A E I O U L N S T R = 1, D G = 2, B C M P = 3, F H V W Y = 4, K = 5, J X = 8, Q Z = 10.
  • For tile wall art, count each letter in the name and remember a standard set has only one Q, Z, J, K and X, so a name like Zzyzx needs tiles from more than one set.
  • For a fictional family, pick names whose origin matches the character's background: Kowalczyk for Polish roots, Quintero for Spanish, Berkowitz for Ashkenazi Jewish.
  • Names with double high-scoring tiles (Vazquez, Quiroz, Zajicek) look great in tile art because the 10-point tiles visually stand out.
  • If you plan to play the name in real Scrabble, remember proper nouns are not valid in official play; the scoring is only for fun.

Frequently asked questions

What surname scores the most points in Scrabble?

Among real surnames, ones stacking Q, Z, X and J score highest: Vazquez is worth 35 face-value points (V4 A1 Z10 Q10 U1 E1 Z10), Kwiatkowski about 26 and Zajicek 27. Proper nouns are not legal in tournament play, so this is for fun and tile art only.

How many tiles do I need to spell a family name in Scrabble tiles?

One tile per letter, but a single standard set only contains one each of Q, Z, J, K and X and two of B, C, F, H, M, P, V, W and Y. Names with repeated rare letters (Vazquez has two Zs) need tiles from a second set or a craft-store bulk pack.

Are these real family names?

Most are real surnames from Polish, Spanish, German, Yiddish, Turkish, Chinese and English naming traditions. A handful at the end (Quixley, Zaxwell, Jexton) are invented Q/X/Z blends that suit fictional families and game characters.

Can I use one of these names for a character or a business?

Yes. Real surnames are not owned by anyone, and the invented ones here are free to use for characters, Sims families, teams or creative projects.
