Generate cyberpunk last names that sound like a real megacity: Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Latin American, West African, Arabic and Eastern European surnames, hyphenated sprawl families, corporate dynasties and a few invented futuristic names. Built for Cyberpunk RED, 2077, Shadowrun and original fiction.
About cyberpunk last names
Cyberpunk last names do a different job than cyberpunk handles. A handle like Glitch or Ronin is chosen; a surname is inherited, and it tells you where a character's family came from before the city swallowed them. That is why the genre's best surnames are ordinary ones from everywhere at once: Welles, Alvarez, Takemura, Okafor, Volkov, Nguyen, Haddad. Night City, the Sprawl and Chiba City are dense, migrant megacities, and a roster of Satos, Reyeses and Kowalskis sells that density far better than invented sci-fi words do.
A second layer is the corporate dynasty. Arasaka, Kusanagi and Tyrell are names that carry a company with them, and they tend to be old, proper and slightly formal. Use those sparingly, for executives, heirs and the occasional disgraced family. Hyphenated surnames such as Ortega-Kim or Mbeki-Stroud are a useful shorthand for characters a few generations into the city, where cultures have mixed and nobody remembers which side of the family was which.
The list below blends real surnames from East Asia, South Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Europe with sprawl hyphenates, hard-edged Anglo names for mercenaries and fixers, and a handful of invented futuristic surnames for settings that lean more science fiction than street.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pair an ordinary surname with a street handle rather than trying to make the surname itself sound cool: Kenji 'Static' Sato reads as a real person, Kenji Razorblade does not.
- Spell real surnames correctly and keep them with plausible first names; a Japanese surname on a character with a Spanish first name is fine if the hyphenate or backstory explains it.
- Save the invented, heavy-sounding surnames (Varrick, Dravenholt types) for corporate heirs, AI constructs or characters who chose a new legal identity.
- Hyphenated surnames are great for fixers and corpos who want to signal lineage, and for characters whose parents came from two very different districts.
- Build a recurring family: give three or four NPCs the same surname across a campaign and the city immediately feels like it has history.
Frequently asked questions
What are some famous cyberpunk last names?
Arasaka, Silverhand, Welles, Alvarez, Takemura, Kusanagi, Batou, Deckard, Tyrell, Batty, Millions, Armitage and Protagonist (from Snow Crash) are the ones most fans recognise. Most are either ordinary real-world surnames or corporate family names, which is the pattern this generator follows.
Should a cyberpunk surname be futuristic or realistic?
Mostly realistic. The genre's megacities are populated by people with normal family names from many cultures; the future shows up in the handles, the tech and the corporations, not in everyone being called Zyntrax. A few invented surnames work for corpo dynasties or heavily augmented characters.
Can I use these for Cyberpunk 2077, Cyberpunk RED or Shadowrun characters?
Yes. Apart from the canon reference names like Arasaka and Takemura, every surname here is free to use for game characters, fiction, comics and other projects.
Why are there hyphenated last names in the list?
Hyphenates like Ortega-Kim or Okafor-Lindqvist are a quick way to show a family that has lived in a multicultural city for generations. They also distinguish a character at a glance in a cast where many people share common surnames.
