Generate last names for angel characters: light and wing compounds like Dawnfeather and Sixwing, Latin family names like Caelicola and Tubicen, Hebrew-style names like Gavrieli and Ben-Shachar, choir bynames like of the Third Choir, and real surnames that come from the word angel, from Engel to D'Angelo.

About angel last names

Angels in scripture and tradition have one name and no family: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael. A surname is something fiction adds, usually because an angel is living among humans, belongs to a heavenly house in a fantasy setting, or needs a full name on a character sheet. That leaves you free to pick the style that fits the story. Most angel first names end in -el, a Hebrew element meaning God, so a surname with a different ending usually pairs best: Cassiel Dawnfeather, Uriel Tubicen.

The list covers eight styles. Light, wing and virtue compounds (Lightbringer, Sixwing, Oathkeeper) suit high fantasy. Latin family names use real Latin words: Caelicola means heaven-dweller, Aliger wing-bearing, Tubicen trumpeter, Signifer standard-bearer. Hebrew-style names follow real patterns, such as the -i ending that turns Gavriel into the surname Gavrieli, or Ben- and Bar- for son of, as in Ben-Shachar, son of the dawn. Choir and host bynames (of the Third Choir, of the Flaming Sword) replace a surname altogether.

For modern and urban fantasy, two groups are made of real surnames: names that come from the word for angel, such as Engel (German), Angyal (Hungarian), Andel (Czech) and D'Angelo (Italian), and everyday surnames with a heavenly ring like St. Clair, Pentecost, Messenger and Lightfoot.

How to choose angel last names

  • Say the full name aloud. First names ending in -el or -iel pair best with surnames that start with a consonant and do not end in -el themselves: Raziel Wingrave, Anael Brightwell.
  • Match the style to the setting: compounds for high fantasy and tabletop games, Latin for gothic or Renaissance tones, Hebrew-style names for stories rooted in scripture and apocrypha, real surnames for angels passing as human.
  • Use a choir byname as a rank, not a family. In the traditional ordering the seraphim are the first choir and ordinary angels the ninth, so of the Ninth Choir marks a humble messenger and of the First Choir a being of terrifying rank.
  • For a fallen or exiled angel, keep the old surname and let it turn ironic: a Lightbringer who no longer brings any, a Steadfast who broke.
  • Many of the Hebrew and Latin words here carry real religious meaning, and the real surnames belong to living families. Use them with the care you would give any living tradition.

Frequently asked questions

Do angels have last names?

Not in scripture or tradition, where angels go by a single name such as Michael or Gabriel. Surnames are a convention of fiction, games and roleplay, used when an angel lives among humans, belongs to a celestial house, or simply needs a full name. That is why this list offers both family names and bynames like of the Seventh Heaven, which work the way medieval bynames did.

What last names mean angel?

Several real surnames come straight from the word angel: Engel in German, Angyal in Hungarian, Andel in Czech, Angelov in Bulgarian, Angelopoulos in Greek, and D'Angelo, De Angelis and Angelini in Italian. Malak and Melek are the Arabic and Turkish words for angel and are also used as family names. The word angel itself comes from the Greek for messenger, which is why Messenger is in the list too.

What is a good last name for a guardian angel?

Look at the virtue and duty names: Flockward, Guardwell, Soulkeeper, Watchward, Gatewarden and Shieldbearer all describe protection. In Latin, Custos means guardian and Tutelaris means protecting, and the Hebrew-style Shomer (guard) and Magen (shield) do the same job.

How do I pair these with an angel first name?

Pick a first name from the angel name generator, then choose a surname with a different ending and rhythm. A long first name likes a short surname, as in Zadkiel Dove or Jophiel Quill. A short one can carry a long byname, as in Ariel of the Sapphire Throne.
