German Last Name Generator

German surnames became hereditary between roughly the 12th and 15th centuries, and most still show exactly how they were earned. The biggest group is occupational: Müller (miller), Schmidt (smith), Schneider (tailor), Fischer, Weber (weaver), Wagner (cartwright), Becker (baker), Schäfer (shepherd) and Koch (cook) are the nine most common names in Germany today, and they are all jobs. Next come patronymics such as Peters, Hansen, Jürgens and Hinrichs, names from physical traits or character like Klein, Groß, Lang, Schwarz, Braun and Kraus (curly-haired), and place names ending in -bach, -berg, -feld, -hausen or -stein.

Region matters. Southern names lean Bavarian and Swabian: Huber, Gruber, Moser, Wimmer, Mayer with a y, Hölzl and Staudinger. The north and northwest favour -sen and -mann endings (Petersen, Thomsen, Brinkmann, Westermann) and Low German spellings like Voß and Kock. Franconia and Saxony give you Rößler, Pietsch and Menzel. Spelling variants are real and distinct families: Schmidt, Schmitt, Schmid and Schmitz all exist, as do Meyer, Meier, Maier and Mayer.

When you pick a name, match the spelling to the setting. Umlauts and ß are standard in Germany; emigrant families in the United States usually dropped them (Mueller, Schaefer, Weiss, Strauss). A common occupational name reads as ordinary and grounded; a -berg or -stein place name or a rare nickname like Morgenstern or Wunderlich stands out immediately.
