Last names taken from the natural world: real English surnames such as Rivers, Hawthorne and Fox, real names from other languages such as Lindqvist, Blumenthal, Dubois and Yamamoto, and nature compounds for characters such as Ashgrove and Fernsby.

About nature last names

A great many family names began as a description of where someone lived or what the land around them looked like. In English that gives Rivers, Woods, Brooks, Forrest, Heath, Moss and Marsh for the landscape, Hawthorne, Birch and Ash for trees, and Fox, Wren and Finch for animals, which often started as nicknames. Real surnames like those make up most of this list.

Other languages do the same thing with their own words. Lindqvist is Swedish for linden twig, and Björk means birch. Blumenthal is German for flower valley, Rosenbaum is rose tree and Tannenbaum is fir tree. Dubois is French for "of the wood", Van der Meer is Dutch for "from the lake", Robles is Spanish for oaks, Volkov comes from the Russian word for wolf, and Yamamoto is Japanese for the base of the mountain. Finnish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Turkish, Hebrew and Chinese names are here too. The list shows surnames only, without language tags, so look up a name's origin before you build a character's heritage on it.

The rest are nature compounds in the English style for fiction and games: Ashgrove, Thornfield, Fernsby, Rowancroft, Heathermoor. Some exist as rare surnames or place names and others are coined, so treat them as character names first.

How to choose nature last names

  • Match the language to the character. Lindqvist suits a Swedish family, Kobayashi a Japanese one, and an English village story is better served by Marsh, Appleby or Underwood.
  • Say the full name out loud. A short surname such as Moss, Ek or Lin balances a long first name, while Summerhayes or Morgenstern wants a short one in front of it.
  • For a fantasy map, give each region one landscape. Fenn, Sedgemoor and Marshfield sound like lowland families, while Cragg, Peake and Stoneleigh belong in the hills.
  • Names from languages that use the Latin alphabet keep their accents and special letters, as in Sjöberg, Dąbrowski and Yıldız. Where a form or a game will not take them, use the usual plain spelling: Sjoberg, Dabrowski, Yildiz.
  • If you are choosing a new family name for real life, read up on its meaning and history first, and check how common it is where you live.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real last names?

Most of them are. The English, German, Dutch, Nordic, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Slavic, Hungarian, Turkish, Hebrew, Japanese and Chinese entries are family names that real people carry. The compounds, with names such as Birchmere and Foxglade, are there for characters. Some of those also turn up as rare surnames or place names, and we have not sorted out which.

What do nature last names mean?

Usually the plain word for a plant, an animal or a piece of land. Kobayashi is Japanese for small forest, Silva goes back to the Latin word for forest, Virtanen comes from the Finnish word for stream, Farkas is Hungarian for wolf, and Yıldız is Turkish for star. English ones such as Brooks, Heath and Birch mean what they say.

Which names work best for a fantasy or cottagecore character?

Start with the compounds, such as Ashgrove, Thornfield, Hollybourne and Meadowcroft, which sound like old English families, though some of them are real surnames too. Short real surnames such as Wren, Frost, Thorne and Rowan also sit well in an invented world. Names that are tied to one living language, such as Yamamoto or Dubois, fit better in a story set in our own.

Can I use one of these as a pen name?

Yes. A nature surname is easy to remember and easy to spell, which is most of what a pen name needs. Search the full name before you settle on it, because a common surname such as Rivers or Woods may already belong to a writer in your field.
