Pet names follow real trends. For more than a decade the most common names on vet and pet-insurance databases have been short human names: Luna, Max, Bella, Charlie, Milo, Daisy, Cooper and Lucy. That reflects the biggest shift in pet naming — animals are now named like family members, so 'people names' (Oliver, Penny, Winston, Mabel) have overtaken descriptive names like Fluffy and Spot. The other big trends are food names (Peanut, Waffles, Mochi, Nacho), nature names (Willow, River, Juniper, Sage) and pop-culture names that spike whenever a film or series lands.

The practical rules are the same whether you're naming a Labrador, a lop-eared rabbit or a budgie. One or two syllables are easiest to call and easiest for the animal to learn. Names with a hard consonant or bright vowel (Max, Rocky, Ziggy, Coco) cut through background noise better than soft ones. Avoid names that rhyme with commands ('Kit' and 'sit', 'Bo' and 'no') or with another pet in the house.

Beyond that, the best names usually come from one of three places: what the animal looks like (Smokey, Patches, Marmalade), how it acts (Bandit, Zoom, Cuddles, Boss), or a private joke your family will still enjoy in ten years — which is why a rabbit called Gary or a Great Dane called Peanut always gets a laugh.
