Ferrets get named for three things: their shape, their coat and their crimes. The shape gives you Noodle, Slinky, Pretzel and Sausage, along with the owner slang that treats them as furry snakes or carpet sharks. The coat gives you a ready-made palette: sable ferrets have a dark mask and points over a cream body (Bandit, Smokey, Cocoa, Shadow), albinos are white with pink eyes (Snowball, Casper, Marshmallow), cinnamons and champagnes are warm and pale (Ginger, Butterscotch, Latte), and blazes and pandas have white heads that suggest Patches, Smudge or Q-Tip. The crimes give you the biggest category of all, because every ferret is a thief. Beyond that, ferret owners lean into food (Mochi, Tofu, Nacho, Churro), mischief icons (Loki, Houdini, Gizmo), and in-jokes about the dook, the excited chuckling noise a happy ferret makes while it war-dances across the room. Because ferrets sleep eighteen hours a day and are kept in pairs or groups, paired names such as Bonnie and Clyde or Mario and Luigi are common. Whatever you pick, keep it to one or two syllables: you will be shouting it under the sofa a lot.
