Snail Name Generator

Snail names almost always play on one of three things: the shell, the slime, or the speed. Shell puns give you Shelldon, Shellby, Shellington and Michelle; slime gives you Slimothy, Sir Slimesalot and Baron von Slime; and the speed joke runs in both directions — either leaning in with Slowpoke, Pokey, Mosey and Dawdle, or going ironic with Turbo, Flash, Rocket and Lightning McQueen. Gary from SpongeBob is still the single most common pet snail name by a wide margin, with Turbo and Escargot close behind.

The species matters more than you might think. Giant African land snails are the size of a fist and live for years, so they suit grand or dignified names like Goliath, Archibald, Agatha or Professor Plod. Aquarium mystery snails and nerites are usually named for their colour — Goldie, Mango and Banana for golds, Inky and Midnight for blacks, Sapphire and Azure for blues, Zebra and Stripes for patterned nerites, Cheerio or Hula Hoop for ramshorns. Garden snails found under a flowerpot tend to get soft nature names: Moss, Dewdrop, Clover, Lettuce, Pebble.

This list mixes all of those styles with tiny-thing names (Button, Thimble, Nibbles), old-fashioned human names that are funny on a snail, and a few foreign words for snail itself, so it works for pets, classroom snails, children's books and game characters.
