Chicken Name Generator

Backyard chicken keepers name their birds in a handful of recognisable styles. The oldest is the old-lady name: Henrietta, Mabel, Ethel, Gladys and Doris suit the way a fluffy hen bustles round the yard muttering to herself. Then there is the food and breakfast school, where hens become Nugget, Omelette, Biscuit or Benedict, and the punning school that produces Cluck Norris, Hen Solo, Yolko Ono, Amelia Egghart and Attila the Hen. Roosters get grander or tougher names, like Foghorn, Big Red, Napoleon, Chanticleer and Rooster Cogburn.

Breed and colour also drive names. Buff Orpingtons are routinely called Buffy, Butterscotch or Goldie; Rhode Island Reds become Ruby, Rusty or Rhoda; Silkies get Puff, Cotton or Pom Pom; Barred Rocks and Wyandottes get Dottie, Speckles or Domino; blue and lavender birds get Bluebell or Slate; and Easter Eggers and Marans are often named after their egg colours, Olive and Chocolate. Famous chickens add Ginger, Babs, Bunty and Rocky from Chicken Run, Camilla from The Muppets, Heihei from Moana and Chanticleer from Chaucer.

Since most flocks are six to a dozen birds, many keepers name them as a set: all country singers, all Golden Girls, all breakfast dishes, or all breed puns. The list mixes every style so you can build a coherent flock or find one perfect name for the hen who rules the coop.
