In Minecraft your dog is a tamed wolf, and the only way it gets a name is a name tag: find or trade for one, rename it on an anvil, then right-click the wolf. That makes the name a small commitment, and most players pick one of four kinds. Block and item names (Cobble, Netherite, Glowstone, Biscuit) are the classic choice because they sound like real pet names while staying in-game. Mob names (Creeper, Allay, Axolotl, Ghast) are funnier for a wolf that follows you into caves. Ordinary dog names (Buddy, Luna, Rex) feel right if this dog is basically your dog. And joke names (Not A Wolf, Sir Barksalot, Villager's Nightmare) show up on servers where everyone sees the tag.

Since the 1.20.5 update wolves come in nine variants, so the coat can suggest the name: Ash or Ashen for a pale wolf, Rusty or Chestnut for a rusty one, Snowy or Frosty for a snowy one, Stripe or Spot for striped and spotted coats. If you run a pack, theme the names (all ores, all mobs, all foods) so you can tell them apart at a glance.

Name tags cap at about 50 characters, but short names read best above a wolf's head, especially once you add armor.
