Bearded dragon names pull from a few reliable places. The dragon angle is the obvious one, so Spyro, Toothless, Smaug, Mushu, Drogon, Falkor and Norbert are everywhere in reptile forums, along with wizard names like Gandalf and Merlin for that wise, unbothered stare. Because beardies (Pogona vitticeps) come from the Australian interior, outback names are the second big family: Sheila, Bruce, Matilda, Sydney, Uluru, Bondi, Kookaburra, Wallaby and a respectful nod to Irwin. The desert also suggests Sahara, Mojave, Mesa, Dune, Cactus and Saguaro.

Morph color is a useful starting point. Citrus, hypo and tangerine beardies suit Mango, Tangerine, Sunny or Saffron; red and orange morphs suit Ember, Blaze, Rusty or Paprika; zeros and wits suit Pebble, Slate, Quartz or Ghost; leatherbacks and silkbacks often get smooth names like Velvet or Pascal. Then there is the personality school: beardies bask for hours, wave at nothing, and glare like tiny old men, which is why Gerald, Frank, Mildred, Kevin, Puff Daddy and Sir Licks-a-Lot are perennial favorites.

Bearded dragons can live 10 to 15 years and grow to two feet, so pick a name that still works on an adult lizard with a black beard in full display, not just the three-inch baby in the tank.
