About bearded dragon names

Bearded dragon names pull from a few reliable places. The dragon angle is the obvious one, so Spyro, Toothless, Smaug, Mushu, Drogon, Falkor and Norbert are everywhere in reptile forums, along with wizard names like Gandalf and Merlin for that wise, unbothered stare. Because beardies (Pogona vitticeps) come from the Australian interior, outback names are the second big family: Sheila, Bruce, Matilda, Sydney, Uluru, Bondi, Kookaburra, Wallaby and a respectful nod to Irwin. The desert also suggests Sahara, Mojave, Mesa, Dune, Cactus and Saguaro.

Morph color is a useful starting point. Citrus, hypo and tangerine beardies suit Mango, Tangerine, Sunny or Saffron; red and orange morphs suit Ember, Blaze, Rusty or Paprika; zeros and wits suit Pebble, Slate, Quartz or Ghost; leatherbacks and silkbacks often get smooth names like Velvet or Pascal. Then there is the personality school: beardies bask for hours, wave at nothing, and glare like tiny old men, which is why Gerald, Frank, Mildred, Kevin, Puff Daddy and Sir Licks-a-Lot are perennial favorites.

Bearded dragons can live 10 to 15 years and grow to two feet, so pick a name that still works on an adult lizard with a black beard in full display, not just the three-inch baby in the tank.

How to choose bearded dragon names

• Choose from the adult, not the hatchling. A two-foot lizard named Tiny or Peanut is a joke you will explain for fifteen years, which is fine if you mean it.
• You will not know the sex for certain until a few months in, so unisex names like Mango, Pebble, Ziggy, Ember or Sage save you from renaming.
• Match the morph: citrus and hypo beardies suit Sunny, Tangerine or Honey; red morphs suit Ember or Rusty; zeros and wits suit Slate, Quartz or Ghost.
• Beardies do not learn their names the way dogs do, so pick for the humans in the house; short, easy names like Rex or Spike get used, long ones get shortened anyway.
• Lean into the Australian origin: outback place names (Uluru, Pilbara, Kakadu) and Aussie slang names (Bazza, Shazza, Cobber) are distinctive and rarely taken at the vet.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most popular bearded dragon names?

Spike, Rex, Spyro, Toothless, Draco, Mushu, Smaug, Mango, Pascal, Rango, Ziggy and Godzilla show up most often in reptile communities. Female beardies are often named Sheila, Luna, Mango, Pebbles, Nala, Cleo or Matilda. Funny names like Puff Daddy, Beardy McBeardface and Kevin are also hugely common.

How do I pick a name before I know if my beardie is male or female?

Sexing is unreliable before about four to six months, when males develop a wider head, femoral pores and two hemipenal bulges. Until then, choose a name that works either way, such as Pebble, Mango, Ember, Ziggy, Sage, Quartz or Rango, or pick a name and accept it either way; plenty of female beardies are happily named Bruce.

What are good names for an orange or citrus bearded dragon?

Citrus, hypo and tangerine morphs suit Mango, Tangerine, Clementine, Marmalade, Sunny, Sunkist, Saffron, Cheeto, Dorito, Nacho and Ember. Deeper red morphs suit Blaze, Rusty, Paprika, Sriracha, Cinnamon, Jasper or Garnet.

Do bearded dragons recognize their names?

Not reliably. Beardies recognize their owners and routines, and some will turn toward a familiar voice, but they do not respond to a specific name the way a dog does. That means you can name for fun rather than for training, and a pun or a long regal name costs you nothing.
