Rabbit names lean cosy, small and slightly cheeky, and the best ones come from three sources. The first is the garden: rabbits eat greens, so owners reach for Clover, Parsnip, Sprout, Radish, Basil, Bramble and Dandelion. The second is behaviour — a rabbit's happy leap is called a binky, and Binky, Hopscotch, Zoomies, Nibbles and Twitch all describe things every rabbit does. The third is coat and breed: Holland and mini lops become Floppy or Loppy, grey Netherland dwarfs become Smokey or Pebble, broken-patterned rabbits become Domino, Splodge or Patches, and lionheads and angoras get Fluffball or Puffball.

Storybook rabbits are the classic fallback and still the most searched-for group. Peter, Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Benjamin come from Beatrix Potter; Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig, Blackberry, Pipkin and Dandelion from Watership Down; Thumper from Bambi; Bugs, Lola and Roger from cartoons; Miffy and the Velveteen Rabbit from picture books. Old-fashioned human names — Bertie, Humphrey, Mabel, Agnes, Nellie — are the current trend for house rabbits, alongside pun names like Sir Hopsalot and Bunjamin Button.

Rabbits do learn short names, especially ones with a clear vowel at the end. Two syllables (Pippa, Toffee, Monty) is the sweet spot for calling a rabbit to the pen.
