Hamsters stuff, hoard, escape and sprint, so Nibbles, Pouches, Stashy, Houdini, Zoomie and Wheelie describe a real pet, and a tiny hamster with a grand name (Sir Nibbles, Lord Fluffington, Captain Cheeks) is a joke that never gets old. Ham puns are the fourth category and a genre of their own: Hamlet, Hamilton, Hamish, Ham Solo, Hamwise Gamgee and Hamtaro, the cartoon hamster whose friends Bijou, Oxnard and Boss also make the list.

Syrians are big and solitary, so single statement names fit; dwarf hamsters and Robos are often kept in pairs, so matched names like Peanut and Butter or Salt and Pepper work well.
