Pig names fall into a few families, and most owners borrow from more than one. Food is the biggest: Truffles, Peanut, Biscuit, Pickles, Pumpkin and Waffles top rescue and mini-pig breeder lists year after year, partly because pigs are ruled by their stomachs and partly because round, soft-sounding words suit a round, soft animal. Pork puns are the second family and the one visitors expect: Hamlet, Hamish, Chris P. Bacon, Notorious P.I.G., Sir Francis Bacon and Pigcasso are well worn but still get a laugh, and they work best on a confident pig with a big personality.

Famous pigs supply a third set, from Wilbur, Babe and Porky to Peppa, Pumbaa and Olivia, while old farmyard names like Bertha, Gertie, Wilfred and Clyde suit a sow or boar with some heft. Breed and colour can steer you too: a red Duroc or Tamworth takes Rusty, Ginger or Maple, a spotted Gloucester Old Spot or Juliana becomes Freckles or Domino, a Kunekune with a hairy coat earns Woolly Bear or Fuzzball, and a black Berkshire with white points suits Tuxedo or Socks.

Pigs are sociable and often kept in pairs, so the list includes names that go together (Bangers and Mash, Thelma and Louise, Salt and Pepper) alongside single names for house pigs, 4-H show pigs and farm herds.
