About stardew valley animal names

Every animal you buy from Marnie or hatch in an incubator asks for a name, and with a full coop and barn that can be dozens of chickens, ducks, rabbits, dinosaurs, cows, goats, sheep, pigs and ostriches. The names that feel most at home in the valley come from the game itself: crops and forage (Parsnip, Starfruit, Salmonberry, Cauliflower), minerals and gems (Iridium, Quartz, Frozen Tear), fish and artisan goods (Sturgeon, Gouda, Pale Ale), and Pelican Town residents. Naming a chicken after Shane or a cow after Marnie is practically a tradition, and void chickens, blue chickens and golden chickens invite darker or brighter names like Nightshade, Bluebell and Honey.

The other big family is cozy farm names: food (Biscuit, Dumpling, Mochi, Porkchop), flowers (Marigold, Poppy, Fairy Rose), old-fashioned human names (Mildred, Horace, Clementine) and puns (Hen Solo, Cluck Norris, Moolan). Because you name animals one at a time, many players pick a theme per building: all cheeses for cows, all herbs for goats, all gemstones for the slime hutch.

The game accepts fairly long names, but the name shows when you pet the animal and in the Animals tab, so short names are easiest to read when twelve chickens are crowding the feeding trough. Every name here is game-ready and fits in a single line.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Give each building a theme (cheeses for the cow barn, egg dishes for the coop, gems for void chickens) so you can tell at a glance which animal belongs where in the Animals menu.
  • Use the two-tone color of the animal: blue chickens suit Bluebell, Denim or Skye, void chickens suit Nightshade, Obsidian or Eclipse, and golden chickens suit Honey, Goldie or Saffron.
  • Dinosaurs and ostriches are rare and take ages to hatch, so give them standout names like Littlefoot, Rexy or Ozzie rather than another Nugget.
  • Keep names under about 12 characters if you play on Switch or mobile, where long names get cut off when you hover over an animal in the barn.
  • Name animals after villagers based on who gives you the items: Marnie or Jas for the first cow, Shane for the first chicken, Willy for anything fishy.

Frequently asked questions

Which animals can you name in Stardew Valley?

You name every coop animal (chickens in white, brown, blue, void and golden, ducks, rabbits and dinosaurs), every barn animal (cows, goats, sheep, pigs and ostriches), plus your horse, your cat or dog, and the pets added in the 1.6 update such as turtles. You choose the name when you buy the animal from Marnie or when an egg hatches, and you can rename a coop or barn animal later by interacting with it and choosing the name box.

Can I rename an animal after I have bought it?

Yes for coop and barn animals: interact with the animal and open its info screen (the heart and name panel) and you can edit the name there at any time. Pets and horses do not get that screen; their names are set when you adopt them and are much harder to change, so take more care with the dog, cat or horse than with your twelfth chicken, where a bad first choice is never permanent.

Are there funny chicken names that fit Stardew Valley?

Puns play well in the coop: Hen Solo, Cluck Norris, Princess Layer, Eggatha, Yolko, Sir Cluckington and Lady Featherington. Naming a chicken Charlie (Shane's chicken in his heart events) or Shane is a nod to the villager who cares about them most. For void chickens, Nightshade, Void and Krobus are popular.

What is the character limit for animal names?

Animal names can be fairly long on PC, but consoles and mobile show fewer characters in hover tooltips and in the Animals tab, so anything past about a dozen characters may be clipped. Names here are short enough to display fully on every platform, and none contain the special symbols that can cause issues in save files.
