Generate pet names that work for dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, hamsters, and reptiles: popular pet names, food and colour names, human names, and playful picks for pets with big personalities.

About this generator

Pet names follow fashion just like baby names. Every year the top of the list is nearly identical for dogs and cats: Max, Bella, Charlie, Luna, Milo, Daisy, Cooper, and Lucy have led pet-insurance and shelter rankings for a decade. Underneath that, three trends stand out. Human names for pets (Henry, Frankie, Stanley, Betty, Mabel) are climbing fastest; food names (Peanut, Mochi, Waffles, Noodle) dominate for small and young animals; and mythology names (Loki, Thor, Athena, Freya) are the go-to for pets that look heroic.

The naming logic differs by species. Dogs need a name that carries across a park and does not sound like a command, so two syllables and a hard consonant work best. Cats get named for coats and attitude (Marmalade, Sooty, Cleo, Miss Priss). Rabbits and rodents get soft, small names (Thumper, Nibbles, Pebble); birds get bright ones (Kiwi, Sunny, Tweety); reptiles and fish get deadpan human names like Kevin, Gary, and Susan, which have become an internet tradition of their own.

The list here mixes all of these, plus space names, places, music and dance words, everyday objects, and Norse, Egyptian, and Celtic myth, so you can compare a classic against a food name or a joke title like Sir Fluffington and see which one actually suits the animal in front of you.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Say the name out loud in the voice you will actually use, both calling across a park and scolding; if it feels silly in either, keep looking.
  • For dogs, avoid names that rhyme with commands: Kit sounds like sit, Bo sounds like no, and Ray sounds like stay.
  • Match the name to how big the animal will get; Tank is funny on a chihuahua and Peanut is funny on a mastiff, but Nugget on a great dane may wear thin.
  • Wait a day or two if you can. Coat colour, energy, and quirks usually suggest a name (Bandit, Sooty, Wiggles) that fits better than one chosen in advance.
  • Check the name is different from anyone in the household, including other pets and the kids, since a pet that shares a name with a family member confuses everyone.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most popular pet names right now?

For dogs the top names are Luna, Bella, Max, Charlie, Milo, Cooper, Daisy, and Teddy; for cats they are Luna, Oliver, Milo, Leo, Bella, Lily, Simba, and Loki. These rankings come from pet-insurance and microchip databases and change only slowly year to year.

How do I choose a unique pet name?

Skip the top-20 lists and look at food, place, colour, or old-fashioned human names: Mochi, Juniper, Marmalade, Mabel, and Nigel are all recognisable but far less common than Max or Bella. Species-specific jokes, such as a deadpan Gerald for a lizard, also stand out.

Do these names work for small pets like hamsters, rabbits, and birds?

Yes. Soft names such as Nibbles, Thumper, Pebble, and Sprout suit rabbits and rodents; bright names like Kiwi, Sunny, Mango, and Tweety suit birds; and short food names work for almost every small animal.

Can I use these pet names for a business or product?

Most are ordinary given names, everyday words, and food names, but the list also holds brand and character names such as Oreo, Snickers, and Baby Yoda. Those are fine for a pet at home; before you put any name on a business or product, check it yourself.
