About axolotl names

Axolotls are named more often for how they look than for anything else. The most common pet morph, the leucistic, is pale pink with dark eyes and feathery red gills, so it inspires names like Pinky, Blush, Peach and Bubblegum. Albinos are white or golden (Goldie, Butter, Nugget), wild types are mottled brown-green (Pebble, Moss, Olive) and melanoids are dark (Onyx, Inky, Sooty). Add the animal's permanent smile and frilly external gills and you get Smiley, Frills, Ruffles and Blob.

The axolotl is native only to Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City, and its name comes from Nahuatl: Xolotl was the Aztec god of fire and lightning who, in legend, turned himself into a salamander to escape sacrifice. Xolo, Xochi, Atl (water), Ameyalli (spring), Citlali (star) and Tlaloc (rain god) connect a pet to that heritage, and Spanish food names like Churro, Concha and Elote add Mexican flavor. Minecraft added axolotls in five colors (leucistic pink, wild brown, gold, cyan and the rare blue), which brought names like Bucket, Cyan, Prismarine and Glow Squid. The list also covers tank life (Marimo, Bloodworm), regrowing limbs (Regrow, Blastema) and Japanese words such as Uparupa and Puni Puni.

How to choose axolotl names

  • Name by morph: pinks suit Blush or Peach, goldens suit Nugget or Butter, wild types suit Pebble or Moss, and melanoids suit Onyx or Ash.
  • If you have a pair, choose linked names such as Xochi and Xolo, Boba and Mochi, or Nemo and Dory.
  • Try a Nahuatl name (Atl, Ameyalli, Citlali) to honor the species' Mexican origin; they are short, distinctive and easy to say.
  • Playing Minecraft? Blue is the rarest axolotl variant, so naming a real one Blue, Lucy or Bucket is an in-joke fellow players will catch.
  • Keep it to two syllables or fewer; you will say it a lot at feeding time and it should sound as squishy as the animal looks.
