Axolotl Name Generator

Axolotls are named more often for how they look than for anything else. The most common pet morph, the leucistic, is pale pink with dark eyes and feathery red gills, so it inspires names like Pinky, Blush, Peach and Bubblegum. Albinos are white or golden (Goldie, Butter, Nugget), wild types are mottled brown-green (Pebble, Moss, Olive) and melanoids are dark (Onyx, Inky, Sooty). Add the animal's permanent smile and frilly external gills and you get Smiley, Frills, Ruffles and Blob.

The axolotl also has a rich history worth naming after. It is native only to Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City, and its name comes from Nahuatl: Xolotl was the Aztec god of fire and lightning who, according to legend, turned himself into a salamander to escape sacrifice. Xolo, Xochi, Atl (water), Ameyalli (spring), Citlali (star) and Tlaloc (rain god) all connect a pet to that heritage, and Spanish food names like Churro, Concha and Elote add a playful Mexican flavor. Since Minecraft added axolotls in five colors (leucistic pink, wild brown, gold, cyan and the rare blue), names like Bucket, Cyan, Prismarine and Glow Squid have become popular too.

Axolotls do not hear well and will not come when called, so pick a name for you rather than for the animal: something short and fun to say while feeding, and something that fits the personality you project onto that grin.
