About race horse names
Race horse names have to pass a rulebook before they ever reach a program. The Jockey Club (US), Weatherbys (UK and Ireland) and Racing Australia all cap names at 18 characters including spaces, allow no more than seven syllables, ban names of living people without permission, refuse anything vulgar or misleading (no 'Filly' on a colt) and permanently protect the names of champions such as Secretariat, Seabiscuit, Frankel and Winx. Because roughly 20,000 thoroughbreds are named every year in the US alone, most obvious names are taken, which is why owners get creative.
The classic technique is to combine the sire and dam. A colt by Into Mischief out of a mare called Beautiful Ballad becomes something like Mischief Melody. Others name after their business (Blue Chip, Compound Interest), a home town, a favourite drink (Mint Julep, Single Malt), a piece of racing jargon (Photo Finish, Wire to Wire, Sixteenth Pole) or a joke that will sound good in the stretch call — Hoof Hearted, Odor in the Court and Notacatbutallama are all real registered names.
A strong racehorse name is one a track announcer can shout at speed. Two or three words with hard consonants and a clear rhythm (Quiet Thunder, Late Charge, Empire's Reply) carry better than soft, long phrases. Before you fall in love with one, check availability on the Jockey Club or Weatherbys online name lookup.
Tips for choosing a name
- Count the characters: 18 maximum including spaces and punctuation, no more than seven syllables, and no more than 18 letters if written as one word — that's why real names like Whatsupwiththat get squashed together.
- Say it like a race caller: 'And here comes ___ on the outside!' Names with hard consonants and a clear rhythm sound better at 40 mph than gentle ones.
- Combine the pedigree: take a word or idea from the sire's name and one from the dam's — it's the traditional method and makes the name meaningful to breeders and buyers.
- Check availability before you commit. The Jockey Club (registry.jockeyclub.com) and Weatherbys both have free online name lookups; champions' names are permanently retired.
- Avoid names of living famous people, brand names, or anything the stewards might read as vulgar or misleading — the registry rejects them and you lose weeks before the first start.
Frequently asked questions
What are the rules for naming a race horse?
Names must be 18 characters or fewer including spaces, no more than seven syllables, not already in use or permanently retired, not the name of a living person without written consent, not a trade name, and not obscene or misleading about the horse's sex or breeding. Initials and numbers are restricted.
How do owners come up with race horse names?
Most commonly by combining the sire and dam names, referencing the owner's business or family, using racing jargon, or choosing a memorable joke. Names are usually registered as yearlings or early two-year-olds, before the first race.
Why can't I name my horse Secretariat or Frankel?
Registries permanently retire the names of Hall of Fame and championship horses. Other names become available again several years after a horse dies or leaves racing and breeding, which is why you sometimes see famous-sounding names reused.
Can I use these names for a fictional or video-game racehorse?
Yes — every name here is free to use in stories, games and simulations. For a real thoroughbred, run the name through your registry's lookup first, since some may already be registered.
