Scorpion Name Generator

Scorpion names split along the same line as the animals: the pet hobby on one side, the venomous reputation on the other. Keepers of emperor scorpions (Pandinus imperator), Asian forest scorpions and desert hairies tend toward claw and sting puns such as Pinchy, Clawdia, Nipper and Stinger, or small ironic names for a creature that looks armored (Peanut, Bean, Nugget). Because scorpions fluoresce under ultraviolet light, glow words like Neon, Blacklight, Lumen and Phosphor have become a hobby in-joke, and genus shorthand (Pandi, Hetty for Heterometrus, Hadro for Hadrurus) tells other keepers exactly what is in the tank.

For a character, mascot or villain the source material is older. Egypt had Serket, the scorpion goddess who guarded the dead, and the seven scorpions that escorted Isis (Tefen, Befen, Mestet and the rest); Mesopotamia had the girtablilu, the scorpion-men who guard the sunrise gate in Gilgamesh. The constellation supplies a whole set of ready-made names, from Antares and Shaula to Sargas, Dschubba and the star the IAU actually named Fang. Species names such as Deathstalker, Androctonus and Centruroides read as menace even before anyone looks them up.

Desert and terrain words (Mojave, Sonora, Sirocco, Mesa) round things out for anything that needs to sound sun-baked and patient rather than simply evil.
