Pony names for real ponies and imaginary ones: barn names for Shetlands, Welsh and Connemaras, show-ring names, and two-word My Little Pony-style names like Sunny Skies and Cherry Fizz for stories and OCs.
About pony names
Pony names split into two very different worlds. Real ponies — Shetlands, Welsh Section As, Connemaras, Dartmoors, New Forests and the riding-school stalwarts — almost always get short, warm barn names: Peanut, Biscuit, Toffee, Pickle, Bramble, Misty, Dusty. British ponies in particular collect biscuit and sweet names (Hobnob, Jaffa, Treacle, Bourbon), hedgerow names (Bramble, Bracken, Thistle, Conker) and cheeky names that fit a small animal with a big personality (Rascal, Trouble, Fidget, Gremlin). Registered show names are longer and often carry a stud prefix, but at home the pony is still Bertie or Tilly.
Cartoon and toy ponies follow a completely different pattern. My Little Pony names are almost always two words describing a colour, food, weather or sky image and hinting at a talent: Sunny Skies, Cherry Fizz, Sprinkle Shine, Twilight Glimmer. Fan-made ponysonas copy that formula, and it works well for children's stories, Star Stable characters and picture books.
The simplest way to choose a real pony's name is to look at coat and character: dapple greys become Misty or Dapple, chestnuts become Conker or Ginger, piebalds become Domino or Magpie, and any Shetland with attitude earns Titch, Nipper or Squirt. For a fictional pony, pick one soft noun and one sparkling one and put them together.
Tips for choosing a name
- For a real pony, choose a two-syllable barn name the whole yard can shout (Toffee, Pickle, Bertie); save the elaborate one for the show entry form.
- Coat first, character second: greys suit Misty, Pearl or Smokey; chestnuts suit Conker or Marmalade; coloured ponies suit Domino, Splash or Magpie.
- Small pony, big name works as a joke (a Shetland called Duchess or Little Bear); small pony, small name (Titch, Midge, Pip) works as a compliment.
- For a My Little Pony-style name, combine a food, weather or flower word with a sparkle word: Berry Swirl, Cloud Puff, Lilac Dreams. Two words, and each should be easy for a child to say.
- Check the name against your riding school or Pony Club list before settling; yards often already have a Rosie and a Charlie, and duplicates cause confusion at lessons.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most popular pony names?
Riding schools and Pony Club yards are full of Peanuts, Biscuits, Toffees, Pickles, Rosies, Mistys, Charlies and Berties. Food and biscuit names dominate for small ponies, especially in the UK.
How are My Little Pony names structured?
Nearly all are two words: a colour, food, sky or weather noun plus a word suggesting the pony's talent or mood — Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Sunny Starscout, Izzy Moonbow. Copy that formula for a ponysona or original character.
What is the difference between a barn name and a show name for a pony?
The barn name is what you call the pony every day (Fudge). The show or registered name is longer, often includes the breeder's stud prefix and must be unique within the breed society (for example, Rotherwood Peter Pan). Most ponies have both.
Are these names good for horses too?
Yes for the barn names, though the sweet, tiny-sounding ones (Titch, Squirt, Dinky) are pony jokes. For a full-size horse or a racehorse, the Horse Name Generator and Race Horse Name Generator have names with more scale.
