WoW Dragon Name Generator
Names for every dragonflight of Azeroth
Generate World of Warcraft dragon names that follow real dragonflight conventions: red -strasz and -strasza, blue -gos and -gosa, bronze -dormu and -dormi, black -ion and -ia, green -us and -ra, plus Netherwing, Infinite, Twilight, Primalist and Dracthyr-style names. Canon Aspects sit alongside hundreds of originals for RP, fan fiction and pet names.
About WoW dragon names
World of Warcraft dragons are named by flight, and the suffix does most of the work. Red dragons end in -strasz for males and -strasza for females (Korialstrasz, Alexstrasza). Blues use -gos and -gosa (Malygos, Kalecgos, Sindragosa, Tarecgosa). Bronzes take -dormu and -dormi (Nozdormu, Soridormi), with Chronormu and Anachronos as the famous exceptions. Black dragons favor -ion and -ia (Neltharion, Sabellian, Onyxia, Sintharia), and the green flight is looser, leaning on -us and -ra (Itharius, Eranikus, Ysera, Merithra). Get the suffix right and an invented name reads as canon.
The roots matter too. Azeroth's dragon names use hard, old-sounding syllables: Vael-, Kor-, Tyran-, Nel-, Sin-, Mal-, Cael-. Avoid modern or soft roots, and keep the whole name to three or four syllables so it fits the character-creation box and sounds like something spoken in Wyrmrest Temple. Many dragons also carry a mortal-form name (Krasus, Kalec, Chromie, Ebonhorn) and a title earned in the lore: the Life-Binder, the Black Prince, the Timeless One.
The minor flights have their own sound. Netherwing names end in -aku (Neltharaku, Karynaku). Infinite dragons echo the bronze pattern twisted (Murozond, Aeonus, Chrono-Lord Deios). Primal dragons from Dragonflight have rough, un-suffixed names like Raszageth, Fyrakk and Iridikron, and Dracthyr use hissing endings such as -thal and -reth. This generator mixes canon dragons with originals in every style.
How to choose WoW dragon names
- Pick the suffix for the flight first: -strasz/-strasza red, -gos/-gosa blue, -dormu/-dormi bronze, -ion/-ia black, -us/-ra green. A blue named Something-strasza will get corrected in RP channels.
- Give your dragon a mortal-form name that is a clipped version of the full one (Korialstrasz becomes Krasus, Kalecgos becomes Kalec); it makes visage-form roleplay feel authentic.
- If you play a Dracthyr Evoker, use the Dracthyr patterns (Emberthal, Azurathel, Sarkareth) rather than full dragon suffixes; Dracthyr are not true dragons and the lore treats their names differently.
- For Primalist or proto-drake characters, drop the flight suffix entirely and use rough two-syllable names with k, z and th sounds (Vyrakk, Ozrukk, Fyrakk).
- Titles and epithets belong in your RP profile or guild note, not the name field; keep the name itself under 12 characters so it passes the character screen.
Frequently asked questions
How are WoW dragons named by dragonflight?
Each flight has a gendered suffix: red males -strasz and females -strasza, blue -gos and -gosa, bronze -dormu and -dormi, black -ion and -ia, and green usually -us for males and -ra or -a for females. Netherwing dragons end in -aku, Infinite dragons twist bronze names (Murozond), and Primal dragons like Raszageth and Fyrakk use no suffix at all.
Can I use a canon dragon name like Alexstrasza for my character?
Canon names are almost always taken on live realms and many RP communities discourage playing a named lore figure. Use the canon names here for reference and pick an original name with the same flight suffix, such as Veradastrasz or Myrigosa, for your own character.
What is the difference between a whelp, drake, wyrm and Aspect?
Whelps are hatchlings, drakes are young adults, dragons are mature, and wyrms are ancient dragons of great power. The five Aspects (Alexstrasza, Ysera, Nozdormu, Malygos and Neltharion) were the leaders of each flight, empowered by the titans; after Cataclysm their titles passed to new leaders such as Kalecgos and Merithra.
Do these names work for Dracthyr Evokers?
Partly. Dracthyr names (Emberthal, Cindrethresh, Sarkareth) follow a different pattern with hissing endings and no flight suffix. The Dracthyr-style names in this list work directly; the -strasza or -gos names are better suited to a true dragon character in fan fiction, RP or a dragon-themed pet.
