About death knight names
A death knight is a warrior who died in service and came back wrong, so the best names carry two layers: the respectable knightly name the character had in life, and the cold or corrupted surname death gave them. The genre's template is Warcraft's Arthas Menethil, a crown prince whose name did not change when he took up Frostmourne; alongside him stand Darion and Alexandros Mograine, Thassarian, Koltira Deathweaver, Orbaz Bloodbane, and the Four Horsemen of Naxxramas (Rivendare, Blaumeux, Korth'azz, Zeliek). Dragonlance gave D&D its archetype in Lord Soth, and Warhammer's Blood Knights add Walach Harkon. Notice how often a perfectly ordinary given name (Darion, Sally, Thoras) is paired with a grim epithet or a family name tied to a fall from grace.
Original death knight surnames lean on a small vocabulary: frost and rime for Scourge-raised knights, grave, bone and ash for the undead generally, mourn, sorrow and hollow for the tragic ones. Titles matter too, because death knights are almost always ex-nobility or ex-clergy: Highlord, Knight-Captain, Baron, Dame, Ser. For non-human knights, start from the race's phonology (orcish Gorthak, elvish Sylvaren, dwarvish Thormund) and attach the cold surname.
If you want the character to feel like a person rather than a monster, keep the first name human and let only the surname or title show the rot.
How to choose death knight names
- Keep the given name from the character's living days (Roland, Isolde, Thormund) and put the death in the surname (Coldmarch, Gravewarden, Rimeheart); that contrast is what makes Arthas Menethil and Darion Mograine land.
- For WoW, match the race first: orcs take hard gutturals (Gorrok, Drekthar), blood elves flow (Vaelora, Thalorien), Forsaken and humans use old-world names (Wilhelm, Margarethe), then add a frost or grave epithet.
- Use titles sparingly but deliberately: Highlord and Knight-Captain for Ebon Blade officers, Baron or Margrave for fallen nobility, Ser or Dame for a tragic oath-breaker.
- Single-word names (Mortvain, Vaelthorne, Kaltheris) read well on a nameplate and work as runeblade or guild names too; just avoid anything that spells Frostmourne or Ashbringer with a letter swapped.

Check that the name fits the 12-character limit if you are using it in-game and drop the surname if needed.
Can I use these for a D&D death knight or a Souls-like boss?
Yes. The Ser and Lord entries (Ser Ghislain of the Ashen Vigil, Lord Edwyn Blackmarrow) suit D&D's fallen-paladin death knight and Dark Souls-style knights, while the von-style names (Ulrich von Morrvane) fit vampire-count and Warhammer settings.
Should a death knight have a title?
Usually. Death knights are almost always former paladins, nobles or officers, so a title like Highlord, Knight-Captain, Baron or Dame tells the reader who they were before they fell. Use it in introductions and drop it in dialogue.
