Generate devil names for D&D 5e and dark fantasy: canonical devils of the Nine Hells, goetic dukes and Dante's Malebranche, original infernal names for erinyes, chain devils and pit fiends, contract-themed epithets, mortal aliases for devils in disguise, and small scratchy names for imps.

About devil names

Devils in Dungeons & Dragons are lawful evil: they rule the Nine Hells by contract, rank and ledger rather than by raw fury, and their names are built to match. The canon devils come from real demonology, so Asmodeus, Mammon, Belial, Dispater and Mephistopheles sit alongside goetic spirits such as Bael, Amon, Barbatos and Zepar and Dante's Malebranche (Malacoda, Barbariccia, Rubicante). The common thread is a smooth, Latin, Greek or Semitic sound: two to four syllables, a hard consonant or two, and a vowel or liquid ending. Harsh, apostrophe-heavy names like Graz'zt signal chaotic demons of the Abyss, not devils.

Lesser devils follow the same phonology with a job attached. A pit fiend general, a chain devil torturer or an erinyes hunter is usually known by name plus role or epithet, and those epithets lean on the paperwork of damnation: the Ledger-Keeper, Signs-in-Blood, the Small Print. Imps are the exception, and tend to get clipped, scratchy names like Pox or Scritch. Devils who walk the Material Plane trade their true name for a plausible mortal alias, often faintly aristocratic or clerical.

This list mixes all of those registers so you can name an imp familiar, a warlock's contract broker, a layer's court of nobles or the pit fiend at the end of the campaign.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the devil's rank before naming it. Lemures and nupperibos have no names, imps get short ugly ones, mid-rank devils get name plus role (Chainwright Ferrogast), and dukes and archdukes take a full title and domain.
  • Keep the true name secret and use an epithet at the table. Knowing a devil's true name grants power over it in most settings, so introducing Ravax the Small Print and revealing Ravax later makes for a good plot beat.
  • Match the layer. Devils of Dis and Minauros suit bureaucratic, clerical titles (Notary, Comptroller); Avernus and Phlegethos suit military ranks (Legate, Centurion); Stygia and Cania suit cold, patient names.
  • Use a mortal alias for a devil in disguise. Lucius Ferrand or Madame Verlaine can run a shop, a gambling house or a noble house for months before anyone notices the contract clauses.
  • Contrast devils with demons in the same campaign by sound alone: give devils smooth Latinate names and demons guttural ones with doubled consonants, so players can tell the factions apart by ear.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a devil and a demon in D&D 5e?

Devils are lawful evil natives of the Nine Hells (Baator) who operate through hierarchy, contracts and soul trade; demons are chaotic evil natives of the Abyss who exist to destroy. In 5e both are fiends, but devils include imps, spined, bearded, barbed, chain, bone, horned and ice devils, erinyes and pit fiends, while demons include quasits, dretches, vrocks, glabrezu, balors and the like.

What are the named devils in 5e?

The Lords of the Nine are Zariel (Avernus), Dispater (Dis), Mammon (Minauros), Belial and Fierna (Phlegethos), Levistus (Stygia), Glasya (Malbolge), Baalzebul (Maladomini), Mephistopheles (Cania) and Asmodeus (Nessus). Other canon devils include Bel, Geryon, Moloch, Titivilus, Hutijin, Gazra and Amon, and many goetic names such as Bael, Barbatos and Zepar appear in older editions.

How should I name a devil for a warlock patron or contract?

Give the patron a true name that sounds old and Latinate (Thessalion, Murgathe, Orvaxis), then a title or epithet the character actually uses, such as the Clause-Finder or Keeper of Collateral. If the patron appears in person, add a mortal alias like Silas Mordaunt for scenes in taverns and courts.

Can I use these devil names outside of D&D?

Yes. The historical names (goetic spirits, Dante's Malebranche, biblical devils) are public domain, and the original names and epithets here are free to use in Pathfinder, your own fiction, or any dark fantasy setting. Only the D&D-specific Lords of the Nine belong to Wizards of the Coast.
