D&D Demon Name Generator

D&D demon names are deliberately hard to pronounce, because in the lore they are Abyssal – the language of chaos itself. Look at the canonical demon lords: Orcus, Demogorgon, Graz'zt, Juiblex, Yeenoghu, Baphomet, Fraz-Urb'luu, Kostchtchie, Zuggtmoy, Pazuzu, Dagon. Apostrophes and hyphens split the names into snarls, z, x, k and th sounds dominate, and many end on a hard stop. Only a few (Orcus, Baphomet, Pazuzu, Dagon) come from real mythology; the rest were invented to sound alien and wrong. Devils, by contrast, get smooth Latin-and-Hebrew names like Asmodeus, Dispater and Mephistopheles – if a name sounds elegant, it is probably a devil, not a demon.

Each demon type has its own flavor here. Balors and lords take grand names with epithets (Balgorath the Sunderer, Kazrak the Unbound), mariliths get serpentine double-s and -ith names (Vessith Coilqueen, Sethessa Warmother), glabrezu and hezrou are guttural and clawed (Krogash Bonepincer, Grothul the Bloated), vrocks are shrieking and bird-like (Skreeth Carrionwing, Zaraskrix), and cambions carry mortal-sounding names with a fiendish surname (Cassivar Ashborn, Iolanthe Duskveil). Titles like The Faceless Lord or The Prince of Demons are how cults and scholars refer to lords whose true names invite attention.

For a warlock patron, a summoning gone wrong or the boss at the bottom of your dungeon, pick a name the players will struggle to say and let them mangle it – that is exactly how the Abyss likes it.
