Infernal names belong to devils, the lawful, contract-signing aristocracy of Hell, as opposed to the chaotic demons of the Abyss. In Dungeons & Dragons the distinction matters: the Nine Hells are ruled by archdevils with names drawn straight from Judeo-Christian and medieval demonology (Asmodeus, Mephistopheles, Baalzebul, Belial, Mammon, Dispater), each holding a titled layer such as Avernus, Dis, Minauros, or Nessus. This generator follows that tradition, so many names come from real sources: the Ars Goetia's 72 spirits, the Grand Grimoire's infernal hierarchy (Lucifuge Rofocale, Satanachia, Sargatanas), Milton's Paradise Lost, and Dante's Malebranche (Malacoda, Barbariccia, Rubicante) from the eighth circle of the Inferno.
A convincing infernal name has weight and formality. Real demonology names lean on hard consonants and Latin, Greek, or Semitic endings: -us, -eth, -oth, -on, -iel. Fantasy tabletop games add apostrophe-split names (Kaz'rakh, Bel'thazar) to signal the Infernal tongue, and titles that read like legal or feudal offices: the Iron Duke of Dis, the Keeper of Contracts, the Chancellor of Nessus. Latin epithets like Pater Mendaciorum (Father of Lies) or Dominus Cineris (Lord of Ash) suit any devil who speaks in binding clauses.
Use the archdevil names for rulers, the Goetic names for dukes and generals, the apostrophe names for lesser fiends, and the human-sounding names (Ignatius Ashmoor, Lucius Vaskarr) for a devil walking the mortal world.
Tips for choosing a name
- Rank your devils: reserve archdevil names (Asmodeus, Mephistopheles, Dispater) for rulers and use Goetic dukes and marquises (Furfur, Sallos, Marchosias) for their generals.
- Give a devil a formal, feudal title such as the Iron Duke of Dis or the Keeper of Contracts; devils are lawful, and bureaucratic titles feel more infernal than 'Dark One'.
- Use a Latin epithet (Pater Mendaciorum, Dominus Cineris) for a devil who traffics in contracts and oaths.
- Apostrophe-split names like Kaz'rakh or Vor'thal read as spoken Infernal in D&D and Pathfinder; keep them to two syllables per half so players can pronounce them.
- For a devil in disguise among mortals, pair an old Roman or Puritan first name with a fire-tinged surname (Ignatius Ashmoor, Malachai Brimstone).
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between infernal and demonic names?
In D&D and most modern fantasy, infernal refers to devils of the Nine Hells, who are lawful, hierarchical, and deal in contracts, while demonic refers to the chaotic demons of the Abyss. Are these real names from demonology?

The mythological and grimoire names are centuries old and public domain. A handful (Levistus, Zariel, Glasya, Bel, Fierna) are Wizards of the Coast creations; they are fine for home games and fan content, but use the invented or public-domain names for commercial publishing.
