Generate demonic names for fiends, devils, cambions, and warlock patrons: the seven princes and Goetic spirits, the she-demons of Jewish and Mesopotamian lore, Latin infernal titles, and original names built on true demonic phonetics.
About demonic names
Demonic names in Western tradition are mostly the ruins of other people's gods. Baal, Moloch, Dagon, and Astaroth (from Astarte) were Canaanite deities; Beelzebub is 'Baal Zebub', lord of the flies, a mockery of Baal; Asmodeus descends from the Persian wrath-demon Aeshma; Lilith comes from the Akkadian lilitu night-spirits. That layered history is why the classic names feel heavy: they are older than the religions that demonised them. Later grimoires added the 72 Goetic spirits with their formal, Latinised endings (Paimon, Stolas, Naberius, Decarabia), and medieval theology sorted the seven princes by sin: Lucifer for pride, Mammon for greed, Asmodeus for lust, Leviathan for envy, Beelzebub for gluttony, Satan for wrath, Belphegor for sloth.
Demonic naming also includes titles used in place of names, since speaking a demon's true name was thought dangerous: the Adversary, the Accuser, the Prince of Lies, the Unclean One. Latin adjectives from exorcism rites (Maledictus, Perditus, Atrox) work as either names or epithets.
When inventing demonic names, the reliable phonetic recipe is hard stops and gutturals (k, g, kh, gh, z), a low vowel, and one to three syllables: Kazrath, Ghazrak, Vorthax. Hyphenated forms suggest a title or lineage, and sibilant forms (Sszaryn, Vhorlissa) suit serpentine or female demons.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose the register first: grimoire names for ancient, titled fiends; Latin adjectives for church-flavoured settings; invented harsh names for original demon species.
- The seven princes map neatly onto the seven deadly sins, which gives you an instant personality for a demon lord (Belphegor as the indolent, Mammon as the miser).
- Titles like 'the Accuser' or 'the Whisperer' let a demon exist in a story without a name, which is genuinely creepier and consistent with folklore about not naming devils.
- Keep invented names pronounceable at a glance; a name with three consecutive consonants beyond a common cluster (thr, sk, gr) will be skipped over by readers.
- If a demon has a mortal alias, make it plain (Silas, Nero, Damien) and reserve the demonic name for moments of power.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the seven princes of Hell?
In Peter Binsfeld's 1589 classification: Lucifer (pride), Mammon (greed), Asmodeus (lust), Leviathan (envy), Beelzebub (gluttony), Satan (wrath), and Belphegor (sloth). Other lists swap in Belial, Abaddon, or Astaroth.
What makes a name sound demonic?
Guttural and hissing consonants (k, kh, z, s), low or dark vowels, and endings borrowed from Hebrew, Latin, or Greek (-oth, -us, -el, -on). Names that are corrupted forms of older god names (Beelzebub, Astaroth) also carry a demonic weight because of their history.
What is the difference between a demon and a devil?
In popular use they overlap, but in D&D and some theology devils are lawful, hierarchical fiends of Hell (Asmodeus, Mephistopheles), while demons are chaotic fiends of the Abyss (Orcus, Baphomet). In folklore 'the Devil' is a single figure and demons are his lesser spirits.
Can I use these demonic names in a commercial project?
Yes. Historical and mythological names are public domain, and the original names here are free to use in games, novels, films, and other commercial work.
