Generate fiend names for every kind of lower-planar evil: lawful devils with Latinate, contract-lawyer names, chaotic demons with harsh Abyssal names, and neutral yugoloths and daemons in between. Draws on real demonology and D&D and Pathfinder conventions.

About fiend names

'Fiend' is the umbrella term Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder use for the evil outsiders of the lower planes, and the different kinds have noticeably different naming habits. Devils are lawful evil: their names come from real Judeo-Christian and Renaissance demonology (Asmodeus, Mephistopheles, Baalzebul, Dispater, Mammon, Belial) and from D&D's Nine Hells (Zariel, Glasya, Levistus, Fierna). Devil names tend to be pronounceable, Latinate or Semitic in flavor, and often carry a title or epithet that sounds like a job description: Malzephar the Ledger-Keeper, Ozimar Debt-Taker. That fits creatures who trade in contracts.

Demons are chaotic evil and their names are meant to be ugly. D&D's demon lords (Demogorgon, Orcus, Graz'zt, Yeenoghu, Juiblex, Fraz-Urb'luu) set the pattern: guttural clusters, apostrophes, doubled consonants, and sounds that feel wrong in the mouth. Invented Abyssal names like Xul'gathis, Krosthulax, and Ghul'zerath follow suit. Yugoloths (daemons in Pathfinder), the neutral evil mercenaries between the two, get names like Anthraxus and Mydianchlarus that read as diseased and vaguely scholarly.

Much of the list comes from the Ars Goetia and the Lesser Key of Solomon, whose 72 spirits (Paimon, Stolas, Marchosias, Andromalius) have supplied fiend names to fiction for centuries. Use them for authenticity, or use the invented ones when you want a fiend that is entirely your own.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the fiend's alignment before the name: smooth Latinate names for devils, harsh apostrophe-laden names for demons, sickly clinical names for yugoloths.
  • Give devils a title that reflects their role in the infernal bureaucracy (Debt-Taker, Ledger-Keeper, of the Fourth Circle); it makes contract-based plots write themselves.
  • Goetic names like Stolas or Marchosias come with established lore (a crowned owl, a winged wolf); read the entry and you'll get a free character concept.
  • Fiends often hide their true names, so give major villains a public title (the Chained, the Whisperer) and reveal the true name only when it matters.
  • Avoid stacking horror words (Doomdeathfang) for anything above a minor demon; the truly frightening fiends have names that sound old, not loud.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fiend, a demon, and a devil?

In D&D and Pathfinder, 'fiend' is the category that includes all evil outsiders. Devils are lawful evil and live in the Nine Hells; demons are chaotic evil and live in the Abyss; yugoloths and daemons are neutral evil mercenaries. Each group has its own naming style.

Where do most fiend names come from?

Many come from real demonology: the Bible, the Ars Goetia and Lesser Key of Solomon, and medieval grimoires supplied Asmodeus, Beelzebub, Paimon, Stolas, and dozens more. D&D added its own such as Demogorgon, Orcus, Graz'zt, and Zariel.

Are these names good for a warlock patron or campaign villain?

Yes. Devils with titles work well as Fiend-pact patrons and schemers, demon lords make good end-game threats, and lesser goetic names suit cultists' masters and summoned servants.

Can I use these fiend names commercially?

Names from real demonology and mythology are public domain. Names specific to D&D (Graz'zt, Yeenoghu, Fraz-Urb'luu, Zariel) are Wizards of the Coast intellectual property, so use them for home games and pick invented or goetic names for published work.
