Generate Krampus names for Krampusnacht events, horror stories, tabletop games and costume groups: folklore figures such as Klaubauf (Tyrol) and Parkelj (Slovenia), invented troupe names like Nebelwand Pass, and characters like Kettenrassler and Old Rattlechain.

About Krampus names

Krampus is the horned, fur-clad figure who walks beside Saint Nicholas on the evening of December 5 in Austria, Bavaria, South Tyrol and neighboring Alpine regions. He is one of many such figures, and they are not all the same character. Knecht Ruprecht, Belsnickel, Père Fouettard, Hans Trapp and Schmutzli are companions of Saint Nicholas in their own right, each with a home region, and the Perchten belong to a separate custom tied to the nights around Epiphany. In this list every folklore name carries its region in parentheses, as in Bartl (Styria and Carinthia). A name without a region is invented.

Most of the list is invented, on real patterns. A group that runs together at a Krampuslauf is called a Pass, so troupe names pair a descriptive German word with Pass, Krampusse or Teufel: Funkenflug Pass, Hochalm Krampusse, Latschenteufel. Individual figures get German compounds built from real words for what the costume has and does, such as Kettenrassler (chain rattler), Rutenschwinger (switch swinger) and Der Gehörnte (the horned one), or a Bavarian and Austrian short name with a byname, like Ruß-Wastl. English names such as Old Rattlechain and The Soot and Bells Company are there for stories, games and costume groups outside the Alps.

How to choose Krampus names

  • Folklore names are regional. For a story set in Tyrol, Klaubauf or Tuifl fits; in Styria it is Bartl; in Slovenia, Parkelj. Read the region in parentheses before you borrow one.
  • For a troupe, pick a word for something near you (a ridge, a forest, a sound) and add Pass or Krampusse. Real troupes are usually named for their town, so search your chosen name before you print a banner; this list has not been compared with existing groups.
  • Give each mask in a troupe its own character name. A Pass with Der Schweiger, Zottelbock and Glutauge is easier to announce and to remember than ten identical devils.
  • Keep the umlauts and the ß when you write the German names (Rußbart, Hörnerträger). Where a font or platform cannot show them, the standard replacements are ae, oe, ue and ss.
  • For a family event, choose the playful end of the list, such as Cowbell Karl or Grumblehorn, and save Der Lauernde for the horror story.

Frequently asked questions

What are other names for Krampus?

In the Alps the same kind of figure is called Klaubauf in Tyrol, Bartl in Styria and Carinthia, Tuifl in Tyrol and South Tyrol, and Parkelj in Slovenia. Related but separate companions of Saint Nicholas include Knecht Ruprecht in Germany, Hans Trapp in Alsace and Schmutzli in Switzerland. The list gives each of these with its region.

What is a Krampus troupe called?

A group of Krampus performers is called a Pass (plural Passen) in Austria and Bavaria, and the parade they run in is a Krampuslauf. The troupe names here follow that pattern with invented descriptive words, for example Nebelwand Pass, Glutnest Pass and Schattenhang Krampusse. They leave out town names on purpose, because real troupes are usually named after their town.

Are Perchten the same as Krampus?

No. Perchten are masked figures of a separate custom tied to the winter nights around Epiphany, and they are linked to the figure of Frau Perchta, not to Saint Nicholas. The costumes can look alike, which is why the two are often confused. The list keeps a few Perchten names, such as Schiachperchten (Pongau), and labels them.

Do the German names mean something?

Yes. The invented German names are compounds of ordinary words: Kettenrassler is a chain rattler, Glockenträger a bell carrier, Frostzahn frost tooth and Rußbart soot beard. Der Stumme mit der Glocke means the silent one with the bell.
