Generate archdevil names with real weight: the canonical Lords of the Nine, the 72 goetic kings and dukes, Gnostic archons and fallen Watchers, plus original infernal nobles with titles fit for a Hell-bound contract. Built for D&D, Pathfinder and dark fantasy fiction.
About archdevil names
Archdevils are the rulers of Hell, and their names carry a very different flavor from rank-and-file demons. The Lords of the Nine in Dungeons & Dragons (Asmodeus, Dispater, Mammon, Belial and Fierna, Levistus, Glasya, Baalzebul, Mephistopheles, Zariel) were lifted almost entirely from real demonology: Asmodeus from the Book of Tobit, Mammon and Belial from the New Testament, Dispater from the Roman god of the underworld, Mephistopheles from the Faust legend. The result is names that sound old, pronounceable and faintly Latin, Greek or Semitic.
The second great source is the Ars Goetia, whose 72 spirits come pre-ranked as kings, dukes, marquises, presidents and counts. Bael, Paimon, Beleth, Astaroth, Stolas and Marchosias arrive with a title, a number of legions and a described form, which is why they slot so neatly into an infernal aristocracy. Gnostic archons (Yaldabaoth, Sabaoth, Saklas), the fallen Watchers of Enoch (Shemyaza, Azazel, Gadreel) and the Malebranche of Dante's Inferno round out the historical material.
The original names here follow the same rules: two to four syllables, hard consonants softened by a Latinate ending, and an optional title or epithet that hints at a bureaucratic role, since archdevils rule by contract rather than by rage. Malzephar the Ledger-Keeper and Chancellor Amrodel feel at home beside Mephistopheles; a name like Skullcrusher does not.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give every archdevil a domain and a title before settling on the name: Duke of the Fourth Layer, Mistress of Debts, Warden of the Styx. The title does half the characterisation and lets you hide the true name until it matters.
- Mix one borrowed name with one invented one at the top of a hierarchy. A goetic duke like Barbatos serving an original archduke like Vethrasque makes the invented name feel as old as its neighbour.
- Keep archdevil names smooth and Latinate. Harsh clusters and apostrophes (Fraz-Urb'luu, Graz'zt) read as chaotic demon lords, not lawful devil princes.
- Use the surname-style entries (Lucius Ferrand, Sabine Vautrin, Balthazar Moreaux) for an archdevil walking the mortal world in disguise; the infernal name and the human alias can both appear in play.
- Avoid reusing the canonical Lords of the Nine as player-facing villains in a published setting unless you want that baggage; an invented archdevil can rule a layer you make up with no continuity arguments.
Frequently asked questions
What is an archdevil?
In D&D and similar settings, an archdevil is one of the ruling devils of the Nine Hells, a lawful evil counterpart to the demon lords of the Abyss. The nine layer rulers are called the Lords of the Nine, and lesser archdevils (dukes and archduchesses such as Bel, Geryon, Moloch and Titivilus) serve or scheme beneath them.
Where do archdevil names come from?
Mostly from real demonology and scripture: the Book of Tobit and Revelation, the Ars Goetia and Lesser Key of Solomon, Milton's Paradise Lost, Dante's Inferno, Gnostic texts and the Book of Enoch. D&D added a few of its own, such as Zariel, Levistus, Glasya and Fierna.
How is an archdevil name different from a demon lord name?
Devils are lawful and their names tend to be smooth, pronounceable and Latinate or Semitic (Mephistopheles, Dispater, Belial). Demon lords are chaotic and their names are deliberately ugly, with apostrophes and guttural clusters (Graz'zt, Yeenoghu, Fraz-Urb'luu). If a name sounds like a contract lawyer rather than a wild animal, it belongs on an archdevil.
Can I use these names for a warlock patron?
Yes. Archdevils are the classic Fiend-pact patron. Pick a name with a title (Malzephar the Ledger-Keeper, Archduchess Malvina) so the pact has an obvious bureaucratic hook, and keep the true name secret from other players until the story needs it.
