Generate sahuagin names for D&D: harsh personal names like Kraagh and Okhaat, click names like K'thaarg, rulers like Baron Khargaat, priestesses like Shark-Speaker Urrikha, raiders like Akhaar Keelbreaker, and malenti spies like Laerwen Two-Tides.

About sahuagin names

Sahuagin are the sea devils of Dungeons & Dragons: scaled, shark-toothed raiders who strike ships and coastal villages from the deep. They worship the shark god Sekolah, their priestesses hold real power beside the barons who rule them, and sharks swim with their war parties. Two kinds stand out. Some are born with four arms, and a few, called malenti, are born looking like sea elves and are sent to live among their enemies as spies.

The official books name very few individual sahuagin and set out no naming rules, so this list is invented in a sound that suits them: hard stops, long aa vowels, and the kh, gh and rr of something speaking through gills and too many teeth. It is not a Sahuagin vocabulary. Plain personal names come first (Kraagh, Okhaat, Brukkath), with click names that break on an apostrophe (K'thaarg, Urr'kesh).

The rest is rank and reputation. Rulers and clergy carry titles (Baron Khargaat, Shark-Speaker Urrikha, Jaw-Mother Gorzakha), raiders earn bynames from what they do to ships and shores (Akhaar Keelbreaker, Wavecleaver, Lanternsnuffer), four-armed mutants are named for it (Ghaarok Four-Arms), and malenti go by soft, elven cover names (Malenti Naerith, Laerwen Two-Tides). A few war bands and reef holds round it out (The Red Tide Raiders, Daarkhuul Trench).

How to choose sahuagin names

  • Growl the name before you use it. If it starts to hiss, it is drifting toward lizardfolk or yuan-ti, so swap an s for kh, rr or a hard k: Kraagh, Tkarr, Ghorrak.
  • Put rank on the leaders. A raid led by Baron Tzorrak with Priestess Thakkira at his side tells the players who gives the orders and who speaks for the shark god.
  • Let a byname record a deed. Aakruuz Bell-Silencer and Ghezraak Lamp-Drowner each hint at a raid the village still talks about, which is a ready rumor for your table.
  • Give a malenti two names: an elven cover name such as Laerwen Two-Tides for the surface, and a harsh true name from the personal list for the day the mask comes off.
  • Name the war band and its home water as well. The Ninth Fathom Host out of Tzaakhor Deep gives a coastal campaign a recurring enemy with an address.

Frequently asked questions

Do sahuagin have official names in D&D?

Very few. The books describe sea devil society in detail but name only a small number of individuals and give no naming rules. Every name here, from Kraagh to Baroness Vraakha, is invented for this list in a matching sound, and none should be read as canon.

What is a malenti?

A malenti is a sahuagin born looking like a sea elf. The sea devils use them as spies among their enemies, so the list gives them soft, elven cover names such as Malenti Vaeloris, Miraleth False-Fin and Thaelin the Reef's Ear.

What titles do sahuagin leaders use?

In the Monster Manual a sahuagin leader is a baron, and the clergy are priestesses of Sekolah. The list uses both and adds invented titles in the same spirit, such as Reef-Lord Okkraat, Jaw-Mother Gorzakha, Blood-Caller Kraazhi and Shark-Speaker Urrikha.

How do these differ from lizardfolk or kuo-toa names?

Lizardfolk names hiss and kuo-toa names burble. These snap: hard k and t stops, kh and gh from the back of the throat, doubled r and long aa. The raiding bynames, such as Wavecleaver, Sternripper and Kruthaag Wave-Reaver, also set a sea devil apart.
