Generate imp names with the right mix of infernal hiss and gutter mischief: short spiky names for D&D warlock familiars, folklore imps like Rumpelstiltskin's cousins, and small devils with grand-sounding titles they haven't earned.
About imp names
Imps are the smallest devils in the infernal hierarchy: winged, horned, stinger-tailed, and far more interested in trickery than in open combat. In D&D and Pathfinder they serve as warlock familiars, spies for archdevils, and the fine-print enforcers of infernal contracts. In older European folklore an imp is a household sprite or a witch's familiar, kept in a bottle or a ring, that curdles milk, hides keys and whispers gossip. A good imp name has to carry both sides: a whiff of brimstone and a lot of petty malice.
That gives you three useful naming styles. Sharp, spiky invented names (Skreek, Vezzik, Zaltar, Nabrix) with lots of K, X and Z sounds are the classic tabletop approach and echo the harsher devil names imps serve under. English folk-imp names lean on old words for tricks and mischief: Puck, Bogle, Filch, Wheedle, Widdershins, Pettifog. And the funniest imps carry a self-important epithet that undercuts them: Ozzik the Unimportant, Vezzik the Almost-Mighty, Quazzim the Contractual.
Whatever style you choose, keep it short. Imps are quick and small, and a two-syllable name with a hiss or a click in it says that far better than something long and grand. Save the multi-part titles for the moment an imp is trying to impress a summoner.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose the flavor first: spiky infernal (Skreek, Krex) for a devil-servant, folksy English (Bogle, Filch) for a witch's familiar or a household pest.
- One or two syllables is ideal. Imps are quick and low-status, and a short snappy name reinforces that instantly.
- Add a mock-grand epithet (the Almost-Mighty, of the Third Pit) when the imp is trying to bluff, and drop it in casual scenes for comic contrast.
- For a warlock familiar, let the patron's tone shape the name: a fiend patron's imp sounds infernal, a fey or hag patron's imp sounds more like a boggart.
- Give the imp a job in its surname (Candlethief, Fine-Print, Doorknocker) and you get a hook for how it makes trouble.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an imp and a demon?
In most fantasy settings, and in D&D specifically, imps are lesser devils from the lawful, contract-bound side of the underworld, not chaotic demons. They're small, sly, and more likely to spy or tempt than to fight, which is why their names sound sneaky rather than terrifying.
What should I name my warlock's imp familiar?
Short, hissy or clicky names like Skreek, Vezzik, Nix or Krex feel right for a Pact of the Chain imp, and adding a joking title (Zaltar the Perpetually Late) gives the familiar personality at the table.
Are imps from real folklore?
Yes. In British and German folklore imps were minor mischief spirits and witches' familiars, often kept in bottles or rings. Names like Puck, Bogle, Hob and Boggart come from that tradition and pair naturally with the modern fantasy imp.
Can I use these imp names in a published book or game?
The names are free to use commercially. Just avoid trademarked D&D-specific creatures or characters if you're publishing outside the SRD; a generic imp is a folklore creature and is fair game.
