Aboleth Name Generator

Aboleths are the oldest things in most Dungeons & Dragons worlds: amphibious aberrations that ruled before the gods arrived and that inherit every memory of their ancestors when they hatch. Official lore gives us only a handful of names to copy: Piscaethces, the Blood Queen who spawned the race; Xxiphu, the floating city of the Abolethic Sovereignty in the Forgotten Realms; and the deliberately unsettling sound of doubled letters, long vowels and clotted throat consonants. A convincing aboleth name leans on u, oo and aa, on gh, th, qu and ss, and on lumpy clusters like qq, lth and ulm that feel like they were gargled up through water. Apostrophes and hyphens (Thuul'ghaan, Vorrugh-Tholl) mark the breaks where a human tongue has to pause.

Because aboleths are immortal and remember everything, they rarely use a bare name among themselves. Thralls and cultists know them by epithets (the Drowned Memory, Warden of the Sunless Sea) that describe what the creature remembers or controls, and a lair tends to take the name of the aboleth sleeping in it: the Cistern of Ssathulaq, the Sunken Spire of Ghuulmor.

The list above mixes single names for individual aboleths, long compound names for elder specimens, epithets for the villain your players fear by reputation, and names for lairs, courts and the Sovereignty itself.
