Sea Monster Name Generator

Sea monster names come from three traditions that overlap on any good map. The first is myth: Leviathan and Rahab in Hebrew scripture, Jörmungandr the Midgard Serpent in Norse Eddas, Scylla and Charybdis in the Odyssey, Tiamat in Babylon, Bakunawa the moon-eating serpent of the Philippines. The second is sailors' lore and natural history: the kraken (from Norwegian krake, a twisted or crooked thing), the whale-island Aspidochelone, and the fanciful trolual and ziphius on Olaus Magnus's 1539 Carta Marina. The third is the modern cryptid roster of lake monsters with affectionate nicknames like Nessie, Champ, Ogopogo, and Caddy.

A strong sea monster name usually does one of three things: it sounds ancient and untranslatable (Cirein-cròin, Akkorokamui, Iku-Turso), it describes the harm it does to ships (Hullbreaker, Keelbiter, the Sargasso Strangler), or it takes a title that crews would whisper (the Grey Swallower, the Trench King). Real prehistoric predators such as Mosasaur, Livyatan, and Dunkleosteus also make convincing monster names for science-flavored settings.

Mixing these registers gives a bestiary depth: gods and titans of the sea for the top tier, named regional beasts for the middle, and nickname-style horrors for the creatures your characters actually meet.
