About eldritch names

An eldritch name has to do two jobs at once: it should be almost impossible to say aloud, and it should feel old. Lovecraft set the template with clotted consonants, doubled vowels and apostrophes that stand in for sounds no human throat produces (Cthulhu, Yog-Sothoth, Shub-Niggurath, Y'golonac), and writers from Ramsey Campbell to Brian Lumley kept the rhythm while inventing their own gods. The trick is restraint: a name like Vhoth-Agrael or Tsul-Nemeth works because it still has a shape; a wall of Z's and X's just reads as noise.

The other half is the title. Cults rarely use the true name of the thing they serve, so the mythos is full of circumlocutions: the Crawling Chaos, the Haunter of the Dark, He Who Is Not to Be Named. Titles let you describe an entity without pinning it down, and they scale from a village horror (The Thing in the Well) to something that eats galaxies (The Wheel That Grinds Stars).

Tips for choosing a name

  • Give every entity two names: the true name nobody says (Azhmorath) and the title the cult uses (The Keeper of Broken Constellations). Characters who know the true name should be rare and probably doomed.
  • Pick one phonetic family and stay in it. Guttural compounds with hyphens suit ocean and underground horrors; soft, Carcosan names like Ithillane or Velluroth suit dream-haunting and theatrical entities tied to Hastur.
  • Titles work best when they describe an effect rather than an appearance. The Fog That Thinks or The Thing That Counts Us is scarier than The Giant Tentacle Monster because it leaves the shape to the reader.
  • For a D&D warlock patron or a Call of Cthulhu scenario, seed the name into the world early: a carving, a misheard hymn, a ship's log. A name that arrives before the monster does half the work.
  • Avoid lifting Cthulhu, Nyarlathotep or Hastur wholesale for original fiction. Use the canon entries here as a tuning fork for sound and scale, then build your own.

What makes a name sound eldritch?

Are the Cthulhu Mythos names here free to use?

How do I name an eldritch god for a D&D warlock patron?

Choose a true name the patron whispers in dreams (Ulthaggoth, Ixulthar) and a title the character's cult or grimoire uses (The Tide-Mother of Y'ha-nthlei). The Great Old One patron in 5e works well with names that suggest it is asleep or imprisoned rather than actively hunting.

What is the difference between an eldritch being, an Old One and an Outer God?

Eldritch is the general term for anything alien, ancient and sanity-bending. In the Mythos, Great Old Ones like Cthulhu are immensely powerful beings bound to specific places, while Outer Gods like Azathoth and Yog-Sothoth are cosmic forces that exist outside ordinary space and time.
