Generate elder god names for cosmic horror, dark fantasy and tabletop lore: real primordial deities like Tiamat, Nyx and Ymir, Lovecraftian Elder Gods and Great Old Ones, and hundreds of original true names, whispered titles and cult epithets for beings that predate creation.

About elder god names

Elder gods are the ones that were already old when the familiar pantheons were young: the primordial sea, the first dark, the hunger before stars. Babylon had Tiamat and Apsu, the salt and fresh waters whose bodies became the world; Greece had the protogenoi Chaos, Gaia, Nyx and Erebus; Egypt had the Ogdoad of Nun, Kek and Heh sleeping in the waters before creation; the Norse had Ymir, whose corpse was carved into land and sky. Their names are short, heavy and strange, drawn from the oldest layer of each language.

Fiction added a second layer. Lovecraft and his successors gave gods beyond human morality unpronounceable names (Azathoth, Yog-Sothoth, Nodens) and, more importantly, titles used in place of names: the Blind Idiot God, the Black Goat of the Woods. Cults rarely speak the true name of the thing they serve, so an elder god usually arrives with an epithet, a family title (Grandmother Salt, Father of the Unlit Road) or a circumlocution like She Who Devours Dawn.

This generator covers all three registers: the real primordials, a short run of Mythos canon, and original names with the same phonetic weight, from guttural compounds like Vrakh-Uldum to soft, ancient-sounding names like Ilmathune and Oserenne, plus titled forms and cult epithets for things that must not be named directly.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Give each elder god at least two names: a true name the cult whispers (Thanderoq) and a public epithet everyone else uses (the Hunger in the Deep Ice). The gap between them is where the dread lives.
  • Match the sound to the domain: deep vowels and doubled consonants (Thruumgal, Gorrthak) for stone, sea and hunger; softer liquid names (Seliath, Vaenoriel) for sleep, dreams and the void before light.
  • Keep true names pronounceable. One hyphen or apostrophe adds age; three makes the name a typo. Ahn-Kethoros reads as ancient, a wall of consonants reads as noise.
  • Borrow structure from real primordials: pairs and opposites (salt and fresh water, dark and light, sky and sea) make a believable first generation of gods for your setting.
  • Use family titles (Old Mother Hunger, Uncle Salt, the Pale Grandmother) for folk-horror settings where villagers treat the ancient thing under the hill as a relative rather than a deity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an elder god, an old god and an outer god?

In mythology an elder or old god is simply a primordial deity from before the ruling pantheon, like Tiamat, Chaos or Ymir. In Lovecraftian fiction the terms are more specific: Outer Gods (Azathoth, Yog-Sothoth) are cosmic forces, Great Old Ones (Cthulhu, Hastur) are powerful alien beings, and the Elder Gods (Nodens, Hypnos) were later framed by Derleth as their opponents. Most games and stories blur these, and this list mixes all of them.

Are these names from real mythology or invented?

Both. The first section is real primordial gods from Mesopotamian, Greek, Egyptian, Norse, Hindu, Chinese, Maori, Aztec and African traditions, followed by a short run of Lovecraft Mythos canon. Everything after that is original: true names, titled forms and cult epithets written to sound equally old.

Can I use these for D&D, Call of Cthulhu or my novel?

Yes. Real mythological names are public domain, and the original names here are free to use in any campaign, novel, game or worldbuilding project. For a tabletop setting, pick one true name and two or three epithets and let different cults and scholars use different ones.

How do I make an elder god name sound ancient rather than just evil?

Avoid modern villain sounds like hard X and Z clusters and go for weight instead: long vowels, a closed final syllable (-oth, -ur, -ath, -une), and a title that describes a cosmic role rather than malice. The Sea Before the Sea or the Silence Before Stars sounds older than the Destroyer, because it implies a time before anything existed to destroy.
