Generate Lovecraftian names for Great Old Ones, Outer Gods, shoggoth-spawn monsters, 1920s New England investigators, Innsmouth-style cultists, doomed coastal towns and forbidden books. Canon Mythos names sit beside hundreds of original ones written in the same register.
About lovecraftian names
Lovecraftian names work because they sound like something a human mouth was never meant to say. Lovecraft built his gods from clotted consonant clusters (Cthulhu, Tsathoggua, Shub-Niggurath), doubled letters and apostrophes (R'lyeh, Y'ha-nthlei), and hyphenated compounds (Yog-Sothoth, Nyarlathotep's many masks). He then gave them evasive epithets instead of descriptions: the Crawling Chaos, the Black Goat of the Woods, He Who Is Not to Be Named. The original entity names in this list follow the same phonology: heavy on gh, th, ss, qq and zh, short on soft vowels, and paired with a title that hints at a shape without ever showing it.
The human side of the Mythos is just as distinctive. Investigators and professors carry Miskatonic-style names (Henry Armitage, Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee), while decayed families in Innsmouth, Dunwich and the fictional villages here carry Puritan Old Testament first names like Obed, Zadok, Jedediah and Mordecai, attached to real Essex County surnames like Marsh, Gilman, Whateley, Orne and Waite. A cultist sounds wrong because his name is too old for his town.
You will also find canon and original places (Innsmouth, Kadath, Saltmarrow, Stillmouth), lesser spawn, cults, and forbidden books modeled on the Necronomicon and De Vermis Mysteriis. Mix them: a town, a family, a book they found, and the thing it woke.
Tips for choosing a name
- For an original Great Old One, keep it to two or three syllables of hard sounds (Vhoth-Ygrael, Qaathu) and give it an epithet characters use instead, because nobody in the story should say the real name casually.
- Name human characters by era and class: a 1920s Miskatonic scholar gets a full three-part New England name, a Dunwich farmer gets an Old Testament first name and a single worn-out surname.
- Spell a monster name so it can be pronounced at least two ways. Lovecraft said Cthulhu was only an approximation, and that uncertainty is part of the effect.
- Pair a cursed town with a specific trade or landmark, such as Saltmarrow's refinery or the lighthouse at Keld, so the town feels like a place before it feels like a horror.
- Forbidden tomes sound best with a dead language or an unreadable author: Latin (Liber Ivonis), German (Unaussprechlichen Kulten), Arabic (Al Azif), or simply 'the Grey Concordance'.
Frequently asked questions
Are these names from Lovecraft's actual stories?
Some are. Cthulhu, Nyarlathotep, Randolph Carter, Innsmouth, the Necronomicon and roughly a hundred others are canon from Lovecraft and the wider Cthulhu Mythos written by Derleth, Smith, Howard, Bloch and Lumley. The rest are original names written in the same style so you can use them freely in your own fiction or campaign.
How do I make an eldritch god name sound Lovecraftian?
Use consonant clusters that English avoids (gh, qq, zh, tsa), add an apostrophe or hyphen to suggest a break in human speech, and avoid soft endings like -a or -ia. Then give the entity a human nickname such as the Sleeper or the Pale Cartographer, which is what your characters will actually say out loud.
Can I use these for Call of Cthulhu or other tabletop games?
Yes. The investigator, cultist, town and tome names are written for 1920s-era Call of Cthulhu, Arkham Horror, Delta Green and Trail of Cthulhu style games, and the entity and monster names work for any cosmic horror setting.
What makes a good Lovecraftian character name?
Period and place. Scholars and doctors get formal, slightly old-fashioned full names (Dr. Eliphalet Wyndham), coastal families get Puritan first names with a single faded surname (Zadok Allen, Obed Marsh), and outsiders get names that mark them as not from around here, which Lovecraft used for dread.
