DnD Book Name Generator
Titles for tomes, grimoires, journals and ledgers in your campaign
Generate D&D book names for the shelves of your world: forbidden grimoires, dusty histories, bestiaries, spell primers, adventurers' journals, hymnals, cookbooks and cursed folios. Every title is ready to drop into a library, a dragon's hoard or a wizard's study.
About DnD book names
Books in Dungeons & Dragons do a lot of quiet work. A title on a shelf tells players what a wizard studies, what a cult believes, or what a dead adventurer was afraid of, and the best titles hint at a hook without spelling it out. Official D&D books set the tone: the Book of Vile Darkness, the Tome of Clear Thought, the Libram of Ineffable Damnation, Volo's Guide to Monsters. The pattern is an old-fashioned container word (tome, libram, codex, folio, psalter, grimoire) plus a subject that sounds either holy or forbidden, or an author's name plus a confident claim to expertise.
Not every book should be a legendary artifact, though. Real libraries are mostly ordinary, and a shelf feels lived-in when it holds 'Cheeses of the Dalelands' and 'Owlbear Husbandry, Second Edition' next to the cursed folio. Treatises ('On the Nature of Mimics'), journals ('The Diary of Ysolde Varn'), ledgers, hymnals, cookbooks, travelogues, plays and children's fables all give players texture and, occasionally, clues.
This list mixes canon artifacts with hundreds of original titles across those types. Use a grand one for the macguffin, a dry one for the scholar's study, and a funny one for the tavern bookshelf; the contrast is what makes each stand out.
How to choose DnD book names
- Match the container word to the book's role: tome, libram and codex read as powerful artifacts; primer, handbook and almanac read as mundane; psalter, litany and catechism read as religious.
- Put an author on it. 'Volo's Guide' and 'Mordenkainen's Tome' show how a name turns a generic title into a character, and an NPC author gives players someone to track down.
- Use dull, specific titles for background filler ('Tariffs, Tolls, and Other Tyrannies') so the one sinister title on the shelf actually stands out.
- A journal or letter collection is the easiest way to deliver exposition. Name it after the writer and a place or event, like 'Letters from the Ashen Front'.
- For a cursed or sentient book, lean on body or sound words: bleeds, whispers, hungers, teeth, throat. Players will not want to open it, which is exactly right.
Frequently asked questions
Are any of these real D&D book names?
A handful are canon magic items or sourcebooks, such as the Book of Vile Darkness, the Tome of Clear Thought, Volo's Guide to Monsters and the Demonomicon of Iggwilv. The rest are original titles written to sit alongside them, so you can mix recognizable lore with books that are yours.
How do I name a spellbook for my wizard character?
Most wizards simply call it their spellbook, but a named one is more fun. Use a container word plus a personal detail ('The Brass Folio', 'Notes Toward a Taxonomy of Dragons') or your character's name plus a claim ('Arlo Fen's Complete Evocations'). Apprentices inherit books, so a title can also name the former owner.
What should a cursed or forbidden tome be called?
Forbidden books tend to use words of hunger, binding and silence: The Hungering Page, Tome of the Stilled Tongue, The Bound Scream. Give it a vague, dreadful subject rather than an explicit one; 'What the Worm Knows' is scarier than 'Book of Evil Spells'.
Can I use these titles for a fantasy novel or a non-D&D game?
Yes. Titles that do not reference Forgotten Realms places or official D&D items are generic fantasy and work in any setting. Just skip the handful that name Waterdeep, Barovia, Sigil or Wizards of the Coast products if you want your world to be your own.
