Generate D&D world names for your homebrew campaign setting: single invented words in the style of Toril, Krynn and Eberron, compound English names that work on a map, epithets like The Shattered Isles, plus Norse, Latin, Greek, Arabic and East Asian flavoured worlds.

About dnd world names

Official D&D worlds set a clear pattern: Toril, Oerth, Krynn, Athas and Eberron are all short invented words, usually two syllables, with one strong consonant and an ending that is easy to say in a sentence like "the gods of Krynn". That brevity is deliberate. A world name gets spoken at the table constantly, printed on every map and typed into every session note, so the names that stick take half a second to say. Longer invented names (Vaelthara, Korravesh, Ithrendal) still work if they have an obvious stress and no awkward clusters.

There are two other reliable styles. Compound English names such as Ashenreach, Brightharrow and Frostmarch tell players what the place feels like before the DM says a word, and they pair naturally with continent and kingdom names in the same register. Epithets like The Shattered Isles or The Nine Dominions suit worlds known by what happened to them; they sound like something an in-world scholar would write. Borrowing a real-world sound palette (Norse for a frozen north, Latin for a fallen empire, Arabic for a desert) gives the setting history without inventing a language.

The list mixes official settings for reference with original names in all of these styles, so you can match the tone of your campaign rather than settle for a generic fantasy placeholder.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick a name your players can say in under a second. If the table keeps calling your world "the world" three sessions in, the name is too long or too hard to pronounce; Toril and Krynn last because they are short.
  • Check it against the official settings and popular streams. Names that sound too close to Faerûn, Exandria or Golarion will make players assume they know the lore and import expectations you did not intend.
  • Decide what the name refers to. Toril is the planet and Faerûn is a continent; your world name can be the whole sphere, the known continent or just what the dominant culture calls home, and the other layers should come from our continent and kingdom generators.
  • Give it an in-world speaker. A name like The Known Lands implies a scholarly tradition, while Korravesh implies an old tongue; either way, decide who coined it and you get a free piece of lore.
  • Avoid stacking descriptive words. Frostmarch works; Frostwinterdeathmarch does not. One evocative root plus one geographic element is the sweet spot for compound names.

Frequently asked questions

What are the official D&D world names?

The main ones are Toril (home of the Forgotten Realms and the continent of Faerûn), Oerth (Greyhawk), Krynn (Dragonlance), Athas (Dark Sun), Eberron, Mystara, Nerath (the 4th edition default), Aebrynis (Birthright) and the Demiplane of Dread, Ravenloft. Exandria and Wildemount come from Critical Role, and Golarion is the Pathfinder setting. They are included at the top of the list as reference points.

Should my homebrew world name be one invented word or a phrase?

Use a single invented word (Vaelthara, Skelvaryn) if the name will be spoken constantly and printed on maps, and an epithet (The Sundered Continent, The Lantern Coast) if the world is mostly referred to by its history or geography. Many DMs use both: a formal name for the planet and a nickname the common folk actually use.

Can I use these names in a published adventure or campaign book?

The original names are free to use in homebrew, published adventures, novels and video games. Steer clear of the official trademarked settings (Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Exandria and so on) for anything commercial, and run a quick search to make sure another creator has not already built a well-known setting with the name you pick.

How do I name the continents, kingdoms and cities inside the world?

Choose one style for the world itself, then let the regions drift by culture: a Norse-flavoured north (Myrkholm), a Latin-flavoured old empire (Regnum Aureum) and an Arabic-flavoured desert (Sahrakesh) inside a world called Ithrendal suggests migration and history. Our DnD continent, kingdom and city generators follow the same conventions so the layers match.
