Generate warlock patron names for D&D: Hexblade weapons like Widowsong, the Blade That Remembers, Fathomless powers like The Drowned Admiral, deathless kings, sorrowful celestials and homebrew patrons such as The Storm That Learned Its Name. Archfey, Fiends, Great Old Ones and genies with their vessels are here too.

About warlock patron names

A warlock's patron is known by a title more often than a name, and the good titles hint at the bargain. The Prince of Frost tells you the price is warmth; a patron called The Tide That Keeps Accounts tells you the debt will be collected. This list mixes three forms, each readable alone: a bare title (The Pale Edge), a name with an epithet (Morrowbane the Thirsting Blade), and a name with an office (Solenne, Herald of the Morning).

The list is dealt at random, so every entry signals its patron type through its wording. Blades, scabbards and the Shadowfell mark a Hexblade patron. Tides, trenches and wrecks mark the Fathomless. Liches, barrows and crypts mark the Undead and the Undying, while dawns, unicorns and stern lights mark a Celestial. About a tenth each goes to Archfey, Fiends, Great Old Ones and genies of the four kinds, each genie named with its vessel.

The rest are homebrew patrons for tables that want something stranger: a dead god, a storm that thinks, a city, a dragon, a forgotten ancestor, a star. If you need one kind only, the Archfey, Great Old One, fiend and genie generators on this site go much deeper.

How to choose warlock patron names

  • Let the title state the bargain. The Collector of the Ninth Clause wants paperwork; The Light That Asks Too Much wants sacrifice. A player should be able to guess the cost from the name.
  • Match the wording to the patron type on the character sheet: weapons and the Shadowfell for a Hexblade, the sea for the Fathomless, graves for the Undead or Undying, light for a Celestial, a vessel for a Genie.
  • Give the patron a short form for the table. The Colossus of the Ninth Fathom becomes 'the Ninth' in play, and a warlock who uses the short form sounds like someone who has lived with the deal for years.
  • Decide whether the patron knows the warlock exists. Great Old One titles such as The Indifferent Vastness work because it does not; a Fiend such as Malgrave the Ledger-Devil reads every line.
  • For a homebrew patron, keep the name and borrow the features of the closest published patron type. A sentient storm can run on Fathomless or Genie features with no rule changes; ask your DM first.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a warlock patron?

Titles work better than personal names. Try The Pale Edge or Widowsong, the Blade That Remembers for a Hexblade, The Drowned Admiral for the Fathomless, The Deathless King of Ashen Barrow for the Undead, The Weeping Dawn for a Celestial, or The Storm That Learned Its Name for a homebrew patron.

Are these official D&D patrons?

Seven entries use patrons named in published Dungeons & Dragons books: the Raven Queen, the Prince of Frost, the Queen of Air and Darkness, Asmodeus, Orcus, Tharizdun and Dendar the Night Serpent. They are there as reference points. Everything else is an original name in the same style and does not come from any rulebook, and this site has no connection to Wizards of the Coast.

How do I tell which patron type a name is for?

Read the imagery. Blades and the Shadowfell mean Hexblade, tides and trenches mean Fathomless, liches and barrows mean Undead or Undying, dawn and radiance mean Celestial, courts and revels mean Archfey, contracts and brimstone mean Fiend, and a lamp, ring or bottle means a Genie. Homebrew entries say what they are outright, as in The Dead God of Harvests.

What is the difference between a patron and a pact?

The Otherworldly Patron is who the warlock made the deal with, and it sets the subclass. The pact (Blade, Chain, Tome or Talisman) is a separate choice about the gift the patron gave. This generator names patrons, so any entry can be paired with any pact.
