Genies, or jinn, come from pre-Islamic Arabian belief and the Qur'an, where they are described as beings made of smokeless fire who live alongside humans, unseen. Later folklore and the One Thousand and One Nights sorted them into ranks: the mighty marid of the seas, the fiery ifrit, the shape-shifting sila, the desert-dwelling jann, and the personal qarin that shadows every human. Names in these stories are simply Arabic and Persian names of the period, so a djinn might be called Sakhr, Dahnash, or Maimunah, and be addressed with a kunya such as Umm al-Rih (Mother of the Wind).

A convincing genie name therefore has three ingredients to choose from. First, real Arabic or Persian given names, ideally with meanings tied to fire, wind, light, or precious stones (Lahib means flame, Yaqut means ruby, Nasim means breeze). Second, an honorific built with al-, ibn, or umm that hints at the spirit's element or domain. Third, for older or more terrifying spirits, a bare, hard-sounding name like Barqan or Zawba'a that reads as a title in itself.

The list above mixes all three styles so you can pull a courtly marid, a laughing wish-granter, or a bound ifrit that resents its lamp. Pair a short first name with an epithet when a character needs weight; keep it to one word for a trickster.
