Generate genie and djinn names drawn from Arabic and Persian tradition, the One Thousand and One Nights, and the classic ranks of jinn: marid, ifrit, jann, and sila. Built for fantasy writers, tabletop players, and anyone naming a spirit of smoke and fire.
About genie names
Genies, or jinn, come from pre-Islamic Arabian belief and the Qur'an, where they are described as beings made of smokeless fire who live alongside humans, unseen. Later folklore and the One Thousand and One Nights sorted them into ranks: the mighty marid of the seas, the fiery ifrit, the shape-shifting sila, the desert-dwelling jann, and the personal qarin that shadows every human. Names in these stories are simply Arabic and Persian names of the period, so a djinn might be called Sakhr, Dahnash, or Maimunah, and be addressed with a kunya such as Umm al-Rih (Mother of the Wind).
A convincing genie name therefore has three ingredients to choose from. First, real Arabic or Persian given names, ideally with meanings tied to fire, wind, light, or precious stones (Lahib means flame, Yaqut means ruby, Nasim means breeze). Second, an honorific built with al-, ibn, or umm that hints at the spirit's element or domain. Third, for older or more terrifying spirits, a bare, hard-sounding name like Barqan or Zawba'a that reads as a title in itself.
The list above mixes all three styles so you can pull a courtly marid, a laughing wish-granter, or a bound ifrit that resents its lamp. Pair a short first name with an epithet when a character needs weight; keep it to one word for a trickster.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match rank to sound: marids and kings of the jinn suit long formal names with al- epithets, while jann and minor spirits work best with short two-syllable names.
- Use a kunya (Abu, Umm, Ibn) to encode what the spirit rules, such as Umm al-Rih for a wind djinn or Ibn Nar for a child of fire.
- For female genies, Persian names such as Firuzeh, Roshanak, or Mahtab give a softer, courtly feel than Arabic warrior names.
- If your genie is bound to an object, name the object too; 'Ghassan of the Ring' tells the reader the rules of the character in four words.
- Avoid Disney-flavored names like Genie or Jeannie unless you are writing comedy; they break immersion in serious fantasy.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a genie, a djinn, and a jinn?
They are the same word. Jinn is the Arabic plural (singular jinni), djinn is a common French-influenced spelling, and genie is the English form popularized by the 1704 translation of the Arabian Nights, borrowed from Latin genius.
Are these real names from Arabian mythology?
Many are. Sakhr, Dahnash, Maimunah, Shamhurish, and Zawba'a appear in the Nights and in medieval Arabic grimoires, while most others are authentic Arabic and Persian names chosen for meanings tied to fire, wind, and jewels.
What are the types of genie I can name?
Traditional lore lists marid (powerful water spirits), ifrit (fire spirits), sila (shape-shifters), jann (desert spirits), and ghul (graveyard haunters), plus the qarin, a personal companion spirit. Each suits a different naming tone.
Can I use these genie names in my book or game?
Yes. The names are drawn from public-domain folklore and common given names, so you can use them freely in fiction, tabletop campaigns, and commercial projects.
