About archfey names

Archfey are the sovereign powers of the Feywild in Dungeons & Dragons, and their names follow a distinct convention: most are known by a title rather than a personal name. Official examples include the Queen of Air and Darkness, the Prince of Frost, Hyrsam the Prince of Fools, Zybilna, Verenestra the Oak Princess and, of course, Titania and Oberon of the Summer Court. That title-first style comes straight from folklore, where fae rulers were called the Erlking, the Elf-Queen of Elphame, Gwyn ap Nudd or simply 'the Good Neighbours' because speaking a fairy's true name was dangerous.

A strong archfey name therefore does one of three things. It states a domain (the Lord of Owls, the Lady of the Loom), it turns a season or natural process into royalty (the Ever-Autumn Lord, the Coming Winter), or it uses ironic courtesy that hints at menace (the Kindly Lord, the Honest Cheat, the Merciful Huntress). Personal names, when they exist, tend to be Celtic or Welsh in flavour, drawn from the Tuatha De Danann and Arthurian legend: Finvarra, Cliodhna, Nimue, Gwydion, Midir. This list gives you all of these registers, plus court names for when your patron rules a whole realm.

For warlock patrons, choose a title your character can say aloud without knowing what it truly means.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Lead with a title, not a name. 'The Prince of the Last Ember' feels like an archfey; 'Prince Bob' does not, no matter the surname.
  • Use ironic epithets for Unseelie or ambiguous fey: the Kindly Lord, the Gentle Reaper and the Good Neighbor all imply the opposite, exactly as folklore intended.
  • Give a domain that is small and specific rather than grand. Owls, moths, locked doors and lost things are stranger and more memorable than 'shadows' or 'storms'.
  • For a personal name, borrow Celtic and Welsh sounds (Cliodhna, Gwydion, Eirlys) or invent something with soft l, r and w sounds; avoid hard, guttural names, which read as giant or orc.
  • Consider a true name your patron hides and a court title everyone uses; a warlock discovering the true name is a ready-made campaign arc.

Why do archfey use titles instead of names?

In folklore, knowing a fairy's true name gave power over it, so the fae were addressed by titles and euphemisms. D&D adopted this: an archfey's title is public, while its true name is a closely guarded secret and often a plot hook.

What is the difference between Seelie and Unseelie names?

Seelie (Summer Court) names tend toward light, growth and open beauty: the Lady of Larks, the Rose-Crowned. Unseelie (Gloaming Court) names favour dusk, decay and veiled threat: the King of Rust and Rot, the Widow of Winter. Many of the best fey names are ambiguous on purpose.

Can I use these names for my warlock's patron or in a published adventure?

Yes. Folklore figures like the Erlking, Queen Mab and Gwyn ap Nudd are public domain and the original titles here are free to use. Named Wizards of the Coast archfey (Zybilna, Hyrsam) are fine for home games and streams but are WotC property for commercial publishing.
