About demon lord names

Demon lord names come from two very different wells. The first is real historical demonology: the seventy-two demons of the Ars Goetia (Paimon, Stolas, Andromalius), the Watchers of the Book of Enoch (Semyaza, Armaros), the Zoroastrian Angra Mainyu, Mesopotamian spirits like Pazuzu and Lamashtu, and the Christian hierarchy of Asmodeus, Beelzebub and Belphegor. These names carry centuries of association and instantly read as ancient, learned and dangerous, which is why D&D borrowed Baphomet, Pazuzu and Orcus for its own Abyss.

The second well is invented fantasy names built in the style of Demogorgon, Graz'zt, Yeenoghu and Zuggtmoy: names with apostrophes, doubled consonants and unpronounceable clusters (Kra'zoth, Xoth'moraz) that suggest a language never meant for human mouths. These are almost always paired with a domain title, because a demon lord in fiction is defined by what they rule: the Prince of Rot, the Lord of the Bonewell, the Devourer of Names. The title tells the reader what the demon lord wants and what serving them costs.

When naming your own, decide first whether the demon lord is a fallen celestial, an elemental hunger given form, or a mortal who ascended. Fallen angels take Enochian -el and -iel endings; primal demons take the harshest invented names; ascended mortals often keep a corrupted version of a human name.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Use a Goetic or biblical name (Stolas, Bune, Naamah) when you want gravitas and free real-world lore; use an invented name when the demon must be unique to your setting.
  • Give every demon lord a domain title in addition to their name. What they are the Prince of tells players what temptations and horrors they offer.
  • Apostrophes and doubled consonants (Zul'karoth, Ithraxxus) signal alien origin. Use them sparingly so the truly ancient demons stand out.
  • For D&D, keep the pronunciation manageable at the table; a name the DM can't say the same way twice loses menace fast.
  • Consider a demon lord's cultists' name for them separately from their true name. True names are traditionally hidden and are a powerful plot device.

Frequently asked questions

Where do classic demon lord names like Asmodeus and Beelzebub come from?

Mostly from Jewish, Christian and Zoroastrian scripture and medieval grimoires. Asmodeus appears in the Book of Tobit, Beelzebub was a Philistine god, and most of the seventy-two Goetic demons were catalogued in the 17th-century Lesser Key of Solomon.

What is the difference between a demon lord and an archdevil in D&D?

Demon lords rule layers of the chaotic Abyss (Demogorgon, Orcus, Graz'zt), while archdevils rule the lawful Nine Hells (Asmodeus, Mephistopheles, Zariel). Demons are chaos and hunger; devils are tyranny and contracts.

Can I use real demonological names in my book or game?

Yes. Names from the Ars Goetia, the Bible and ancient myth are public domain and have been used freely by everyone from Milton to Bayonetta. Only D&D-specific creations like Yeenoghu or Zuggtmoy are owned by Wizards of the Coast.

How do I make an invented demon lord name sound authentic?

Combine harsh consonant clusters (kh, zh, thr, gul), an apostrophe or hyphen for an alien rhythm, and a title that names their domain, in the pattern of Kra'zoth the Maw or Ulgethrax the Flayed Prince.
