Generate tribe names for fantasy worlds, prehistoric settings, and tabletop campaigns: totemic clans, river and mountain peoples, steppe horse tribes, island seafarers, and invented ethnonyms with the ring of a real language.

About tribe names

Real tribal names come from three main sources, and knowing them makes invented ones ring true. Many are endonyms that simply mean 'the people' in the group's own language (Diné, Inuit, Lakota all carry that sense). Others are exonyms given by neighbours and often describing a landscape or a habit: 'the marsh dwellers', 'the people of the long river'. A third group are totemic or ancestral, naming a clan after the animal or founder it descends from, as in the Bear, Wolf, and Turtle clans of Iroquoian nations or Scottish clans named after a progenitor.

Fantasy tribes work best when the name hints at where the people live and how they see themselves. An invented ethnonym (the Kharuk, the Tesserai) suggests a language and a history the reader has not been told yet; a descriptive name (the Red Ochre People, the Riders of the Sarn Steppe) tells you their land and livelihood at once; a totemic name (the Elk Clan, the Sons of the Grey Wolf) points to their myths. Confederations often count their members: the Five Fires, the Ten Banners, the Twelve Tents.

The list below mixes all of these registers so you can name a single tribe or build an entire region of neighbours and rivals. Because they are invented, none of the names belongs to a real Indigenous nation; if you are writing about a real people, use their own name and spelling.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the biome first: steppe riders, marsh folk, tundra kin, and desert nomads all name themselves differently, and the landscape word will do half the work.
  • Give a tribe both an endonym and an exonym; what the Kharuk call themselves and what their neighbours call them ('the Grey Ash People') can drive plot and reveal bias.
  • Keep invented ethnonyms to two or three syllables and reuse a couple of sounds across a region (Ashvane, Anzari, Aughrim) so the tribes feel linguistically related.
  • Use totem animals that actually live in the tribe's environment; a Salmon Clan on a river and an Ibex Clan in the mountains feel earned.
  • For a real-world setting, avoid inventing 'tribal-sounding' names for actual Indigenous groups; use their own names, or set the story in a fully fictional world.

Frequently asked questions

How do real tribes get their names?

Most often from their own word for 'the people' or 'the true people', from a neighbour's description of where they live or what they do, or from a totem animal or founding ancestor. Colonial-era exonyms were frequently mistranslations, which is why many nations now prefer their own names.

What is the difference between a tribe and a clan?

A clan is a kin group that traces descent from a common ancestor, real or mythical; a tribe is a larger political and cultural unit that may contain many clans. In fiction, 'Clan Ironvane' implies a family lineage while 'the Ashvane' implies a whole people.

Are these tribe names appropriate to use for Native American or other real cultures?

The names here are invented for fantasy and prehistoric settings and are not the names of real nations. If you are writing about a real Indigenous people, use their actual name and spelling and consult their own sources rather than a generator.

Can I use these names in my D&D campaign or novel?

Yes. All of the names are original and free to use in tabletop campaigns, fiction, and games. Adjust spellings and add a shared sound or suffix to fit the languages you have already built for your world.
