Norse society was organized around the ætt, the extended kindred, and the sagas name those kindreds in a handful of consistent ways. Royal dynasties took a founder's name plus the suffix -ingar or -ungar, meaning "descendants of": the Ynglingar of Uppsala, the Skjöldungar of Denmark, the legendary Völsungar, and the Knýtlingar descended from Knútr. In Iceland, where there were no kings, powerful families were named for their territory: the Oddaverjar (men of Oddi), the Haukdælir (people of Hawk-dale), the Vatnsfirðingar (people of Water-fjord), and the Sturlungar, who gave their name to an entire civil-war era.

Alongside kindreds there were warbands. A jarl's household guard was his hirð, sworn warriors were félagar or "fellows," and famous companies such as the Jómsvíkingar and the úlfheðnar (wolf-coats) were known by nickname rather than bloodline. English translations of these ideas, Ravenfeeders, Wolfcoats, Sons of the Sea-Wolf, capture the same swagger for readers who do not speak Old Norse.
