Nation Name Generator

Every real nation has two names: a short form used in conversation (France, Japan, Kenya) and a long form used on treaties and passports (French Republic, State of Japan, Republic of Kenya). The long form tells you the constitutional arrangement: Republic, Federal Republic, People's Republic, Kingdom, Commonwealth, Union, Federation, Sultanate, Emirate, Principality or Free State. Fictional nations feel more real when they have both, and when the long form actually says something about how the country is governed.

Short names themselves come from a few sources. Many are a people plus a suffix meaning land: -ia (Latin, as in Ruritania and Latveria), -land (Germanic), -stan (Persian), -mark (a border region, as in Denmark and the invented Vestmark). Others are descriptive (Australis, the southern land), commemorative (Columbia, Bolivia), or begin with New or Nova to signal colonial origin (New Albion, Nova Lusitania). Fiction has a strong tradition of plausible invented Balkans and Central Europe: Ruritania, Syldavia, Zenda, Latveria, Genovia, Sokovia all use the same -ia and -avia endings.
