About druid tribe names

A druid tribe is a people, not an order. Where a druid circle (Circle of the Moon, Circle of the Land) is the priesthood, the tribe is everyone who lives under it: the herders, hunters and charcoal burners who bring offerings to the grove and name their children after the wood. A tribe name should sound like something the neighbours would call them, or that they would paint on a shield. Real Celtic peoples did exactly this. The Carnutes hosted the great druid gathering in Gaul; the Eburones were 'yew people'; the Brigantes were 'the high ones'; the Silures and Iceni fought Rome from the hills and fens. Their names are short, plural and rooted in a tree, river, god or trait.

This list mixes four registers. Totem tribes (Tribe of the Grey Elk, Wolf-Brothers of the Fen, Stag-Sisters of the Heath) suit D&D cultures like the Uthgardt. Land-named kindreds (Blackfen Tribe, Hollowmere Folk, Thornhallow Folk) work for a map with a grove on it. Plain-English nature peoples (The Mossbound, Keepers of the Cairn, Folk of the Standing Stones) read well at the table. Gaulish, Gaelic and Welsh names (Nemetovari, Clann na Darach, Llwyth y Carw) give a historical or Celtic-fantasy feel.

Pick a tribe, then name its grove and its druids to match, and the culture will hold together.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name the tribe for something you can put on a banner: an animal, a tree, a stone or a piece of weather. Abstract virtues (Harmony Tribe) sound like an order, not a people.
  • Let the land name the tribe. If your map has a Black Fen or a Hollow Mere, the people who live there are the Blackfen Tribe or the Hollowmere Folk; players remember places and peoples together.
  • Vary the suffix: Tribe, Clan, Folk, Kin, Kindred and People all carry slightly different weight. Kin and Kindred suggest blood ties, Folk a settled community, Tribe a wandering one.
  • For a Celtic-flavoured setting, use the real pattern: a plural name with a meaning (Eburones, yew-people; Brigantes, high ones) and let the druids be the tribe's priests rather than a separate faction.
  • Give each tribe a totem druid circle to match (the Grey Elk tribe keeps a Circle of the Land: Tundra druid), and use the druid circle name generator for that half.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a druid tribe and a druid circle?

A circle is the druidic order or tradition; a tribe is the wider people who live by its teachings. In D&D terms, the Circle of the Moon is a subclass, while the Grey Elk Tribe is the culture a Moon druid might come from. This generator names the people; the druid circle name generator names the order.

What are good D&D druid tribe names?

Forgotten Realms tribes such as the Uthgardt use a totem animal plus 'tribe' (Black Lion, Great Worm, Sky Pony), and Reghed tribes use the Elk, Tiger, Wolf and Bear. Original names in that mould include Tribe of the Grey Elk, Wolf-Brothers of the Fen, Stag-Sisters of the Heath and Raven-Children of the Tor.

Are the Celtic tribe names real?

Many are. Carnutes, Eburones, Brigantes, Silures, Iceni, Arverni and others were real Gaulish and British peoples recorded by Caesar and Tacitus, and druids were their priests. Others (Nemetovari, Duravoci, Vernemeti) are invented using the same roots: nemeton for sacred grove, dervo for oak, -vices and -ones for peoples.

How do I use the Gaelic and Welsh names?

They are built from real words: Clann na Darach is 'children of the oak', Muintir na Coille is 'people of the wood', Llwyth y Carw is 'tribe of the deer'. Use them as-is for a Celtic-fantasy setting, or translate one into your own conlang to get a name with the same structure.
