Generate desert tribe names for nomad clans, caravan peoples and raiders of a fantasy waste, from The Sand Vipers and Clan Sunscar to Children of the Red Dune and People of the Ninth Well. All 1,000 are invented peoples for worldbuilding, D&D campaigns and games.

About desert tribe names

A desert people is named for whatever keeps it alive or sets it apart: the well it holds, the route it walks, the animal on its banner, the ancestor who led the first crossing. The names in this list follow those habits. Some are coined people-names in the style of The Oskareth or The Dhuvari, the kind of word a tribe uses for itself and outsiders can only repeat. Others are plain descriptions that could have begun as what the neighbors called them, such as The Oasis Keepers, The Saltwind Kin or They Who Follow the Rain.

The 1,000 names are spread over many styles so a reroll never stays in one register: animal totems, dune and wind names, sun and star names, well and oasis wardens, salt and spice traders, raiders and warbands, ancestor lines that begin with Children of or Sons of, canyon and cliff dwellers, scavengers of a ruined waste, compound clan names like Clan Sunscar, counted camps and banners, herders and craftspeople, and riders of fantasy beasts.

All of them are written as invented fantasy peoples, and none is meant to name a real tribe, nation or confederation. Pick the name first, then let it tell you what the tribe guards, trades and fears.

How to choose desert tribe names

  • Decide what the tribe controls before you name it: a well, a pass, a trade good or a herd. People of the Ninth Well or The Salt Slab Cutters says it in a few words.
  • Give one people two names: a coined name it uses for itself, such as The Zuvendi, and a plain one outsiders use, such as The Slipface Runners. The gap between the two is ready-made worldbuilding.
  • Let the collective noun show the size. A camp, hearth or band is a few families, a clan is one bloodline, and a host, league or confederacy is many clans under one banner.
  • Say the name aloud with a role in front of it, such as an elder of or a rider of. If it trips the tongue at the table, pick a shorter one.
  • Keep invented peoples invented. Do not attach a real tribe's or nation's name to a fantasy culture, and build its customs from the land (water law, guest right, travel routes) instead of from stereotypes.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good desert tribe name?

A good one points at the thing the tribe depends on or is known for. The Oasis Keepers, Riders of the Glass Waste and Children of the Red Dune each tell you where the people live and what they do before any description. Short names work best for groups the players meet often, and longer phrase names suit distant or legendary peoples.

Are these the names of real tribes?

No. The list is written as invented fantasy peoples and none is meant as the name of a real tribe, nation or confederation. The coined names are made-up sounds and the rest are plain descriptions, so if one happens to resemble a real word or a real group's name in translation, treat it as a coincidence and choose another if that matters for your project.

How do I name the clans inside a larger tribe?

Use a coined name for the whole people and emblem names for its branches. The Oskareth could be the people, with Clan Sunscar, Hearth Longshade and Banner Goldgrit as three of its families. Counted names such as Forty Fires also work well for a loose alliance of camps.

Can I use these names in a D&D campaign, a novel or a game?

Yes, they are meant for campaign factions, fiction, mods and game worlds, including post-apocalyptic settings: names like The Bunker Diggers and The Pylon People are there for scavenger tribes. If you plan to publish, search the name yourself first to see whether another setting already uses it.
