Barbarian Name Generator

"Barbarian" was the word Greeks and Romans used for anyone outside their walls, so barbarian names in fiction pull from every people they feared: Goths and Vandals (Alaric, Genseric), Celts (Boudica, Vercingetorix), Huns and steppe riders (Attila, Subedei), and above all the Norse. The Viking sagas are the richest source, because they preserve both real names and the bynames that made them memorable: Ivar the Boneless, Eirik Bloodaxe, Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, Aud the Deep-Minded.

Modern fantasy layered sword-and-sorcery on top. Robert E. Howard's Conan of Cimmeria, Bêlit, and Bran Mak Morn set the tone for gruff one- or two-syllable names; D&D barbarians like Wulfgar, Grog Strongjaw, and Karlach carry it on. Skyrim's Nords and D&D goliaths and half-orcs follow the same logic. A barbarian name usually has three parts to choose from: a short given name with hard consonants (Skarde, Ulf, Yrsa), an optional tribal or clan surname (Bearcloak, Elkhorn), and an earned byname that tells a story (Split-Skull, Slow-Anger, Wolf-Eater). The byname is where the character lives; a name like Kolbjorn Slow-Anger says more than any stat block.
