Generate faction names for rival powers in fantasy, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic and political settings: militant orders, rebel fronts, merchant leagues, noble houses and ideological movements built for RPGs, strategy games and novels.
About faction names
A faction is a group defined by what it wants and who it is against, so the best faction names hint at both. The strongest examples from games and fiction do this in two or three words: the Brotherhood of Steel tells you they are militant, disciplined and obsessed with technology; the Institute sounds clinical and secretive; the Night's Watch is a sworn order with a duty; the Free Cities League is a mercantile alliance defending its independence. Names built around an ideology (the Reformists, the Restoration), a leader or house (the Valdren Loyalists), a shared origin (the Forgeborn, the Exiles) or a duty (the Wardens of the March) instantly suggest motives you can write around.
Structure matters too. Rebels and populists tend toward Front, Movement, Resistance, Underground or plain plural nouns like the Levellers and the Partisans. Established powers use Council, Directorate, Authority, Concordat, Order or House. Merchant and craft factions use League, Compact, Guild, Company and Consortium. Colors and single nouns (the Reds, the Blues, the Greens) have real historical roots in Byzantine chariot factions and civil wars, and still work well for a game with three or four rival sides.
Use the list above as a palette: pair a rebel front with an old-guard order, give the setting one merchant league and one religious authority, and you have the bones of a conflict.
Tips for choosing a name
- Name factions in pairs or sets so they contrast: the Restoration versus the Reformists, the Vault Council versus the Wasteland Legion. Conflict is clearer when the names imply opposing goals.
- Match the suffix to the faction's power level: Front, Underground and Movement for insurgents; Council, Authority, Directorate or Order for those already in charge.
- Give each faction a short in-world nickname (the Greys, the Coinlords, the Watch) that ordinary characters would actually use in speech.
- Avoid stacking adjectives. "The Crimson Shadow Iron Legion" reads as filler; "The Ninth Legion" with a story behind the number is stronger.
- Steal from history freely: Optimates and Populares, Whigs and Tories, Levellers, Maquis and Jacobins are public-domain names with built-in political flavor.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good faction name?
It should imply the faction's goal, structure or origin in a few words, and contrast with its rivals. "The Free Traders' Union" versus "The Colonial Authority" tells you the whole conflict; "The Dark Alliance" tells you nothing.
How are factions named in games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls or Warhammer?
Usually with a collective noun plus a defining trait: Brotherhood of Steel, Caesar's Legion, Thieves Guild, Aldmeri Dominion, Adeptus Mechanicus. They favor Brotherhood, Legion, Guild, Dominion, Order and Enclave over generic words like Team or Group.
Can I use these faction names in a published game or novel?
Yes. The names here are original or drawn from public-domain history, and you can use them commercially. A few (Night's Watch, Emerald Enclave, the Institute) echo well-known franchises, so rename those if you plan to sell your work.
Should a faction name include "The"?
Usually, when it names a specific group (the Resistance, the Iron Tribunal). Drop it for house names and proper nouns (House Valdren, Ceres Free Traders) or when the name is used as an adjective, as in "Concordat troops."
