Generate tribe names for fictional peoples: totem clans, river and mountain folk, nomadic hordes, island seafarers, and prehistoric bands. Names are built with the sound of real tribal naming (place, totem animal, ancestor, or an outsider's label) without copying any real-world nation.
About random tribe names
Real tribal and clan names usually mean one of a handful of things: "the people" in the group's own language, a totem animal or plant, the place they live, a founding ancestor, or a label given by outsiders that stuck. Many endonyms simply translate as "the true people" or "the human beings," while exonyms often describe the group from a neighbor's point of view ("the ones across the river," "the tall ones"). Fantasy authors and game designers borrow all of these patterns, which is why the list above is grouped the same way.
The first block gives you invented endonyms with consistent, pronounceable sounds (Ashkari, Kel Tamesh, Ondaru) that you can treat as the tribe's own word for itself. Then come totem clans (Elk Horn Clan, the Ravenwing), place-based names (the Riverfolk of Ashenmere, the Highreach Clans), occupation or ritual names (the Rain Callers, the Reindeer Followers), ancestor names (the Sons of Vasha), and outsider labels (the Painted Ones, the Beyond-the-Wall People). The final block combines an invented endonym with a descriptor, the way real peoples are often known by both their own name and a translated one.
None of these are real nations. If you want authentic Indigenous, Celtic, or Norse group names, use the dedicated real-world generators linked below and treat them with the respect a living culture deserves.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give each tribe two names, an endonym they use for themselves and an exonym their neighbors use, and let characters from different cultures use different ones.
- Keep sound consistent within a region. If one tribe is the Ashkari, their neighbors might be the Ushakai or the Iskaru, and a tribe from the far north should sound different again.
- Totem and place names imply culture: a Salmon Run Clan lives near rivers and fishes; the Cinder Steppe Riders own horses. Let the name do worldbuilding work.
- Use "Kin," "Folk," "People," or "Band" for smaller or more egalitarian groups and "Horde," "Warband," or "Clans" (plural) for large militarized confederations.
- Avoid lifting real Indigenous nation names for fictional tribes; invented names with the same structural logic feel just as authentic without misrepresenting a real people.
Frequently asked questions
How do real tribes get their names?
Most tribal names come from the group's own word for "the people," a totem animal or plant, the territory they live in, a founding ancestor, or a nickname given by neighbors or colonizers. Many well-known tribal names in English are actually exonyms rather than what the group calls itself.
What is the difference between a tribe and a clan?
A clan is usually a kin group claiming descent from a common ancestor, while a tribe is a larger society that may contain many clans. In fantasy naming, "Clan" tends to sound smaller and more familial, while "Tribe" or "People" suggests a whole culture.
Are these names based on real Indigenous tribes?
No. Every name here is invented, using the same structural patterns (totem, place, ancestor, descriptor) that real tribal names follow. For real Native American, Norse, or Celtic group names, use the dedicated real-world generators.
Can I use these tribe names in a published fantasy novel or game?
Yes. The names are original and free to use in commercial and personal projects; a quick web search will confirm none clash with a well-known franchise faction.
